Police in Omaha, Nebraska, fatally shot a woman after she allegedly kidnapped a toddler at knifepoint inside a Walmart and later slashed the child in a parking lot confrontation, according to authorities, as reported by The New York Post.

Officers were dispatched to the Walmart location just after 9:10 a.m. following reports of a woman armed with a “large kitchen knife” who had taken control of a young child, the Omaha Police Department said.

Investigators identified the suspect as 31-year-old Noemi Guzman.

Surveillance footage showed Guzman inside the store prior to the incident, where police said she shoplifted the knife before approaching a 3-year-old boy and his guardian in an aisle.

Authorities said Guzman brandished the weapon and forced the child’s guardian to walk ahead of a shopping cart while the toddler remained inside it. She then led them through the store and out into the parking lot.

Deputy Chief Scott Gray described the situation during a press conference, stating that the suspect “took possession of the child, essentially kidnapping the child.”

A two-officer patrol unit arrived shortly after and located Guzman in the parking lot, standing near the shopping cart with the child still inside. Officers issued multiple commands for her to drop the weapon, according to police.

Authorities said Guzman continued making threats with the knife and refused to comply with officers’ commands. During the confrontation, she slashed the child.

Body-worn camera images captured the encounter, showing Guzman holding the knife close to the toddler’s face. The footage also showed one of the responding officers drawing a firearm as the situation escalated.

Police said both officers discharged their weapons, striking Guzman. Following the shooting, the child’s guardian and a bystander immediately removed the toddler from the cart and began providing aid.

Emergency measures were also administered to Guzman at the scene, but she was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The toddler was injured during the incident after being slashed by the suspect.

Police said the incident began inside the store when Guzman took the knife and initiated contact with the child and guardian.

The situation moved quickly from inside the retail space to the parking lot, where it ended in the officer-involved shooting.

The Omaha Police Department has not indicated whether additional charges or findings will follow, but the incident remains under investigation.

The confrontation, which unfolded in broad daylight at a busy retail location, drew a rapid response from law enforcement and resulted in a fatal outcome for the suspect after officers said she refused repeated commands and posed an immediate threat while armed.
