Colin McDonald outlined a renewed federal focus on combating fraud and abuse in government programs, emphasizing that enforcement efforts will extend across all levels of wrongdoing and prioritize protecting taxpayer funds.
In remarks addressing enforcement priorities, McDonald said the approach will center on identifying and prosecuting individuals who attempt to misuse government resources, regardless of the scale of the alleged fraud.
He described the effort as part of a broader mission aimed at deterring dishonest behavior and reinforcing accountability.

“To the American people, my promise to you is this that I will work tirelessly day after day to ensure that if someone out there dares to steal your taxpayer dollars, that there might just be a federal prosecutor on the end of that bad decision,” McDonald said.
He added that enforcement efforts will no longer be limited to large-scale cases, indicating that even smaller instances of fraud will be pursued.
“That no longer will we be uninterested in low levels of fraud. We will be interested in all of it,” McDonald said.
According to McDonald, the division will actively monitor potential attempts to submit false claims or applications designed to improperly obtain taxpayer funds. He said individuals considering such actions should expect enforcement measures to follow.

“And if someone out there right now is deciding and determining whether they will file a false application to try to steal your taxpayer dollars, we’re going to care about it, and we’re going to find it, and we are going to prosecute you as hard as we can,” he said.
McDonald described the initiative as part of a broader effort to ensure deterrence, stating that the objective is to discourage individuals from engaging in fraudulent activity by demonstrating that enforcement will be consistent and comprehensive.
“What is the goal of this division? The goal of this division is to ensure deterrence, so that people who are right now being dishonest and stealing the hard earned taxpayer money, that they make right decisions, that they are deterred,” McDonald said.
He said the emphasis on deterrence is tied to a larger understanding of the justice system’s role in promoting lawful behavior.
“That is what justice is for, to ensure right and honest and good conduct,” McDonald said.
McDonald concluded by reiterating the division’s mission to address fraud at all levels and reinforce accountability for misuse of public funds.
“That is what the mission of this division is,” he said.
