Zohran Mamdani likes to call himself a democratic socialist, but after his latest interview, it is clear he has no idea what that actually means.

The man elected to lead New York City on promises of helping “working-class” residents could not even define who they are.

That is not leadership; it is proof that his ideology is built on slogans rather than substance.

Speaking with The New York Times, Mamdani was asked a simple question: what does “working class” actually mean to him? His response could not have been more revealing.

“I think if you have to work to pay your bills, I think that that is one definition of being a part of the working class,” he told reporter Lulu Garcia Navarro.

When pressed further on whether someone earning two hundred fifty thousand dollars per year qualifies, Mamdani admitted, “I haven’t asked myself where it starts and stops.”

Right there, he said it all. The man leading the nation’s largest city has not even considered the most basic economic distinctions that shape American life.

Instead of offering clarity, he rambled about “dignity” and framed the entire issue around vague moral judgments instead of clear standards.

This is the essence of modern progressive thought: lots of emotional language, zero grasp of real economics.

When Garcia Navarro pushed back, saying that his definition did not seem to “ring true,” Mamdani fell back on the tactic every leftist politician uses when caught.

He doubled down.

He claimed the “majority” in this country is “the working class,” a rhetorical sleight of hand that allows him to justify taxing everyone who makes more than he considers fair.

Later, he casually drew the line at one million dollars.

Apparently, in Mamdani’s world, anyone making six figures is a struggling worker, but those creeping near seven figures suddenly become villains ripe for punishment.

That mindset reveals the true heart of his political agenda. Mamdani’s policy ideas have never been about helping the poor climb the ladder.

They are about pulling the successful down to satisfy the resentment of the activist left.

His kind of socialism is not compassionate; it is punitive. It thrives not on opportunity but on envy.

If Mamdani genuinely cared about America’s working class, he would spend less time preaching and more time fixing.

Real working people are mechanics, truck drivers, electricians, and retail employees who pay crushing taxes, face rising energy costs, and struggle under regulations that make everything more expensive.

Real leadership would involve cutting red tape, stimulating business growth, and creating jobs, not endlessly talking about new taxes and class divisions.

Instead, Mamdani’s entire answer circles back to one thing: how to take more money from those he deems “rich.”

When a politician cannot define the people he claims to fight for but can tell you exactly who to target for higher taxes, that tells you everything you need to know.

His definition of “justice” is shaped by jealousy, not fairness.

It is hard to imagine a conservative, libertarian, or even a moderate Democrat fumbling this badly on a question so basic.

Yet for socialists, economic reality always seems to get in the way of narrative.

By redefining “working class” to include almost anyone who works, Mamdani erases real economic distinctions for the sake of ideology.

It allows him to claim moral authority over every policy decision, even when his ideas actively hurt the very people he claims to champion.

Progressive elites like Mamdani rarely understand the daily grind of America’s blue-collar workforce.

They live in luxury condos, send their kids to private schools, and use government as a plaything for social experiments.

Meanwhile, the families they are supposedly “lifting up” are watching their grocery and utility bills increase every month.

But Mamdani, who admits he has never even thought about where the line between classes should be drawn, insists he knows what is best for them.

No one should be shocked that this is the direction New York City has taken.

The city is now facing the fallout from Mamdani’s socialist crusade, with rising costs, growing crime, and a shrinking business climate.

Instead of prosperity, the result is predictable chaos disguised as “progress.”

The same man who cannot define “working class” now controls the economic fate of millions.

The left wants to blur every line, whether it be in economics, culture, or law, so they can be the ones to decide who is moral and who is not.

Mamdani fits perfectly into that mold. His inability to define the people he claims to serve proves that socialism, no matter how it is dressed up as “democratic,” remains an ideology of confusion and control.

A New York City mayor who cannot explain what makes someone “working class” is just another symbol of progressive bankruptcy.

He is not fighting for the workers.

He is fighting for power.

And he is using buzzwords, class warfare, and empty emotional appeals to get there.

The people of New York deserve far better than this brand of political theater.
