A female police officer was assaulted by a crowd while responding to reports of gunfire during a permitted Independence Day block party in North Charleston, South Carolina, according to the North Charleston Police Department.

The incident occurred Saturday evening in the Chicora-Cherokee community during what authorities described as a neighborhood block party that had been approved by the City of North Charleston ahead of the July 4 holiday.

The North Charleston Police Department addressed the incident in a statement posted on the CRIMEWATCH platform after video of the confrontation circulated widely online.

“A neighborhood block party had been permitted by the city of North Charleston in advance of the holiday,” the department said.

“Earlier that day, police leadership met with event organizers to discuss the event, including traffic and parking plans to ensure emergency vehicles could safely access the area if needed.”

According to police, the situation changed later that evening.

“At approximately 8:30 p.m., officers began receiving reports of gunfire and individuals firing fireworks toward passing vehicles. Officers responded immediately and were informed by attendees that several people had begun discharging firearms,” the department said.

Police said officers recovered multiple weapons during their response.

“Multiple firearms and a makeshift spear were recovered,” the department stated, adding that two female officers were injured after being physically assaulted.

Video of the incident shows one female officer being knocked to the ground by two individuals during the confrontation.

As she struggles with a male suspect, another woman approaches and strikes the officer with what appears to be a stick.

The footage also shows additional officers rushing to assist.

Two officers are seen pulling suspects away from the injured officer.

During the struggle, one officer deploys a Taser before taking down a man who appeared to have placed the female officer in a headlock.

The officer is then seen driving his knee into the suspect's chest while attempting to gain control of the situation.

At least two people are shown being taken into custody at the scene.

According to the Carolina Courier, authorities made multiple arrests during the incident and continue to investigate.

“North Charleston Police tell The Carolina Courier that multiple arrests in connection with the incident were made on site, with investigators working to identify additional suspects for interrogation and arrest,” the outlet reported.

The publication also reported that law enforcement agencies sought additional assistance during several Independence Day incidents.

“According to law enforcement sources, both North Charleston and Charleston City made requests for mutual aid from neighboring jurisdictions during several incidents over the Independence Day holiday,” the Carolina Courier reported.

Police have not released the identities of those arrested or announced what charges they may face. Authorities also have not disclosed the extent of the injuries suffered by the two female officers during the confrontation.

The incident occurred as officers responded to reports involving both gunfire and fireworks being directed at passing vehicles, according to the department's statement.

Investigators continue reviewing evidence from the scene while working to identify additional individuals believed to have participated in the assault.

The North Charleston Police Department has not announced whether further arrests have been made since the initial response, but officials indicated that efforts to identify additional suspects remain ongoing.

The investigation remains active as authorities continue gathering evidence related to the events that unfolded during the July 4 gathering.
