For the military members, civilians and contractors who enter Edwards Air Force Base in California each day, even an extraordinary workplace can begin to feel routine.

The wonder of helping shape the future of American airpower can give way to deadlines, reports and daily tasks.

For people outside the gates, however, gaining access to the historic base can remain the opportunity of a lifetime.

For Hailey Macleod, an 18 year old with a determined ambition to become a pilot, that opportunity meant seeing a cherished dream become real.

Macleod was born and raised in the Antelope Valley and attended school in nearby Lancaster.

She grew up in the shadow of Edwards Air Force Base, close to the aircraft and mission that would eventually become part of her special day.

Her life was upended in 2025, when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Since then, Macleod has endured a grueling cycle of medical treatments intended to keep the illness at bay.

The physical burden did not persuade her to abandon her plans. Macleod continued taking online classes through Arizona State University as she worked toward her goal of becoming a pilot.

Her wish was to experience a day in the life of a pilot. Cynthia Bryan, a wish granter with Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles, contacted the 412th Test Wing to help transform that hope into an actual visit.

Macleod and her family arrived at Edwards Air Force Base on Sept. 11 for a special mission.

The objective was to make the aspiring aviator an honorary pilot and give her a close look at the world she hopes to join.

The memorable day began with the presentation of a personalized flight suit. Unit patches from across the 412th Test Wing decorated the suit, giving Macleod a fitting introduction to the organizations working at the base.

She then put her piloting skills to the test inside a high tech flight simulator.

The simulator offered Macleod a chance to experience the controls and demands associated with the aviation path she has continued pursuing through her studies.

The visit then moved from simulated flight to one of the base’s aircraft. Macleod climbed into the cockpit of an F-16 Fighting Falcon, bringing her directly into the environment that had inspired her wish.

The day also included an honorary promotion. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark Massaro, commander of the Air Force Test Center, promoted Macleod to the honorary rank of captain while she was on the ground.

Air Force Col. Daniel Fredberg, deputy commander of the 412th Test Wing, presented Macleod with a commander’s coin.

The recognition added another memorable moment to a visit built around her goal of becoming a pilot.

Macleod also explored some of Edwards Air Force Base’s most iconic landmarks. Each part of the visit provided another view of the base that had long stood near her Antelope Valley home but remained beyond the gates.

The day brought together Macleod, her family, Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles and members of the 412th Test Wing.

Their efforts gave her the opportunity to wear a personalized flight suit, operate a simulator, enter an F-16 cockpit and receive recognition from Air Force leaders.

For the Edwards workforce, the experience delivered a powerful reminder about the importance of its daily mission.

Tasks that can become familiar to those handling deadlines and reports still represent a dream capable of inspiring the next generation.

Macleod’s visit showed that inspiration in unmistakable fashion. While continuing medical treatments and online studies, she held firmly to her ambition and spent a special day at Edwards Air Force Base as an honorary captain and pilot.

The Department of War provides the military forces needed to deter war and ensure the nation’s security.

At Edwards, the 412th Test Wing also helped open the gates for one aspiring pilot whose determination had never left the runway.
