Schools remained closed and some food services were unavailable Monday at Camp Humphreys as crews continued restoring pressure after a widespread water outage.

The disruption affected America’s largest overseas military base while officials carefully managed the recovering system.

Water was available across the installation, according to U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys spokesman Jeff Nagan.

Officials were restoring services gradually because they wanted to avoid placing excessive demand on water lines that were still being repressurized.

“There is nobody without water that we’re aware of in any of our towers or barracks, or any of our facilities,” Nagan said. “We’re just repressurizing the lines.”

The cautious restoration effort also shaped decisions about dining operations. Nagan said officials were considering whether food services should reopen gradually or return all at once as crews monitored the water system.

Several restaurants and coffee shops were serving customers Monday, according to a post on the base’s Facebook page.

Open businesses included Burger King, Starbucks and Dunkin’ at the Downtown Shopping Center.

The Sentry Mini-Mall had Qdoba, Popeye’s and Starbucks available, while Subway was operating at the Family Mini-Mall.

Other food services remained unavailable as the installation continued its measured return toward normal operations.

“It’s a slow and deliberate process, and we want to make sure we are not putting any unnecessary strain on our water system,” Nagan said.

Base officials continued assessing when additional services could safely resume.

The outage began Friday evening after a mechanical failure, according to Nagan. He declined to identify the equipment that failed because of operational security concerns.

Repairs required both a replacement part and specialists, but their arrival was delayed by traffic connected to Chuseok, South Korea’s fall harvest holiday.

That congestion extended the time needed for repair personnel to reach the installation.

“The traffic is really what took them a little bit longer to get here to start making the necessary repairs,” Nagan said. Water began flowing again early Saturday, although crews were still restoring normal pressure throughout Camp Humphreys on Monday.

During the outage, the Army deployed emergency water tanks and established drinking water distribution sites.

Portable toilets were also positioned around Camp Humphreys following the widespread outage that began Sept. 25, 2026.

Classes at the installation’s four Department of War Education Activity schools were canceled Monday to reduce demand on the water system.

Nagan described the closure as a precaution while restoration work continued.

“It’s purely in an abundance of caution,” he said. The cancellation kept the schools from adding further demand while crews worked to stabilize water pressure across the installation.

The outage prompted a water conservation notice Saturday and temporarily closed numerous facilities.

Those closures included Army and Air Force Exchange Service food operations, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities and the AAFES main exchange, according to the base’s Facebook page.

Officials continued reviewing the installation’s status Monday rather than setting an immediate timetable for restoring every service. “Every few hours, we are meeting to discuss how we proceed,” Nagan said.

Camp Humphreys is in Pyeongtaek, approximately 40 miles south of Seoul. It serves as a major hub for U.S. military operations in South Korea and houses the headquarters of U.S. Forces Korea, Eighth Army and the 2nd Infantry Division.

Approximately 43,000 service members, War Department civilians, contractors and family members live on the installation, according to Military OneSource, a DoW information and resource program.

The size of that community made the careful restoration of water pressure and services a basewide concern.

By Monday, officials reported that water was available throughout the installation, but the return of schools, food operations and other facilities remained limited.

Crews continued repressurizing lines while leaders weighed when the remaining services could reopen without straining the system.
