A maintenance worker at a senior living facility in South Los Angeles was arrested Monday after allegedly opening fire on co-workers inside the building, leaving three people wounded, including one victim in critical condition.

Police identified the suspect as 60-year-old Darry Arnette Barnes, a maintenance employee at the Progressive Home for the Elderly.

Barnes allegedly used a handgun to shoot several colleagues during the incident.

According to KTLA, Barnes reportedly said, “I’m tired of this” before the shooting began.

Surveillance footage from the facility showed Barnes pulling a handgun from a shopping cart before firing at another person.

Additional footage showed him firing more shots from the opposite side of a counter while one person appeared to dive over the counter while trying to get away.

Three employees were taken to hospitals for treatment of gunshot wounds.

The victims were described as a woman in her 40s, a woman in her 60s, and a man in his 60s.

One of the three was listed in critical condition following the shooting, while the other two were reported to be in stable condition.

LAPD Captain Mike Bland said investigators believe all three victims worked at the facility.

“The shooting itself is believed to have occurred in the lobby of the building. He [the suspect] was located by responders inside of the building,” Bland told the California Post.

Police officers responded to the Progressive Home for the Elderly and ultimately arrested Barnes without incident outside the building.

The facility houses roughly 100 low-income senior citizens.

Barnes was charged with three counts of attempted murder following his arrest.

He is being held on $4 million bail.

Authorities have not released additional details about what may have led to the shooting beyond the reported statement Barnes made before allegedly opening fire.

The surveillance footage provided investigators with a view of the moments surrounding the attack, including Barnes allegedly removing the weapon from the shopping cart and firing inside the facility.

The incident prompted concern from members of the local community and leaders connected to the senior living facility.

Pastor Jason Malveaux, senior pastor of Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church, spoke after the shooting and called for people to find ways to resolve conflicts without allowing disputes to escalate.

His “biggest prayer is that we figure out a way to have peace with one another,” Malveaux told KTLA.

“It doesn’t have to always escalate to hot tempers,” he said.

The shooting took place in a building primarily occupied by elderly residents, though the three people wounded are all believed to have been employees rather than residents.

Barnes was taken into custody after officers arrived at the scene, and no additional confrontation was reported during his arrest.

The three attempted murder charges expose Barnes to a potentially lengthy prison sentence if he is convicted.

He faces life in prison on the charges.

The case now moves forward as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the events that occurred before Barnes allegedly drew the handgun inside the senior living facility.

Meanwhile, the condition of the most seriously injured victim remained critical following the attack, while the other two wounded employees were reported in stable condition.
