WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • A DOJ filing says the federal warrant identifies Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.”
  • Prosecutors requested more time to answer unsealing requests because the warrant has not been fully executed.
  • Federal authorities have raided Omar’s home, seized personal items, obtained her DNA, and subpoenaed family members.
  • Omar called the investigation intimidation, while Trump said he believes she “might go to jail.”

The Department of Justice disclosed in a Wednesday court filing that a federal search warrant involving Somali Rep. Ilhan Omar identifies her as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The government also said the warrant has not been fully executed or completed.

The disclosure arrived as a criminal fraud probe involving Omar intensifies and appears to touch multiple possible offenses. The filing does not identify those possible crimes, but it makes clear that the search process itself remains unfinished.

Fifteen news organizations asked a federal court last week to unseal the search warrant and other judicial records connected to the case. Those requests have now drawn a government motion seeking additional time before prosecutors must respond.

In that Wednesday motion, the DC US Attorney’s Office requested an extension “until after the subject search warrant has been fully executed,” indicating that federal authorities are not finished carrying out the warrant. Additional items, records, or locations may still be covered.

The motion seeks to keep records connected to the investigation under seal while the warrant remains incomplete. That posture places the push for public access on hold as federal investigators continue their work.

Federal law enforcement has already raided Omar’s home, seized her phone, computer, and passport, obtained her DNA, and subpoenaed members of her family. Those actions form part of a sprawling investigation.

The government’s motion states, “Before the Court are three Applications to unseal ex parte materials and proceedings related to a federal search warrant for the personal residence in the District of Columbia of Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar (the “Subject”).”

The Gateway Pundit identified Nur Said Elmi as the same name used by Omar’s biological brother, whom the outlet said she married in 2009. The warrant’s wording has therefore become a central and highly charged detail in the unfolding case.

Officials believe Omar may have lied on her papers, which could constitute fraudulent citizenship. Border Czar Tom Homan and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin have both suggested that she lied to obtain citizenship and could face deportation.

The investigation is not limited to Omar’s immigration status or whether she lied while seeking citizenship, according to US Attorney Jeanine Pirro. Pirro said there are “several investigations going on,” suggesting that immigration issues and possible financial crimes may both be under examination.

Omar’s financial disclosures and $30 million net worth are among the potential financial matters involved. President Trump also signaled that the probe concerns Omar’s “money that was stolen from her fraudulent activities in Minnesota.”

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer recently raised questions about Omar’s husband’s winery business. Comer said the business was “shut down because of fraud” and alleged that empty barrels of wine had been sold to investors.

Conservative attorney and Article III Project Senior Counsel Will Chamberlain offered his interpretation of the name used in the filing. Chamberlain suggested that the “DOJ believes she is present in the United States under a false identity.”

Omar addressed the investigation Tuesday in a social media video and appealed for more donations to “fight Trump and his administration.” She claimed the investigation was intended to “intimidate me and so many people right before the midterm elections.”

Omar also claimed Trump is “running scared” and said she would be “out there campaigning alongside all of you and making sure that we beat back all of this and that we win in the midterms, win the House, win the Senate, and hold this administration accountable.”

Trump told reporters Tuesday that he believes Omar “might go to jail.” He also attacked Omar’s culture and called her home country of Somalia a “real sh*t house,” adding another blunt salvo as the federal inquiry continues.
