The Justice Department’s investigation into Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar could expand into a broader conspiracy case, according to reports from CNN and NBC News. Federal agents also seized Omar’s phone while searching her Washington, D.C., residence this week.
The investigation reportedly concerns potential immigration related crimes, possible false statements on government documents, and whether multiple people participated in a larger effort to falsify information. The Trump administration is also seeking to strip Omar of her United States citizenship.
“Federal agents seized Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s phone when they searched her Washington, D.C., home this week as part of a federal investigation into potential immigration-related crimes, and have sent roughly a dozen subpoenas out in the case, according to two people familiar with the investigation,” NBC reported.
The reported seizure of Omar’s phone came as investigators sent roughly a dozen subpoenas in connection with the inquiry. CNN reported that several members of Omar’s family have been subpoenaed as investigators examine whether the case extends beyond the congresswoman.

“The possible charges cited by federal officials included conspiracy and making false statements in immigration paperwork, one of the people said,” the outlet said. No charges were described in the reports as having been filed.
Federal investigators have also been examining immigration paperwork filed by Omar’s father. The inquiry reportedly includes questions about information provided when Omar obtained citizenship in 2000 and whether her age was accurately represented during that process.
According to people familiar with Omar’s situation, she came to the United States as a Somalian refugee at around age 12 and became a citizen in 2000. Investigators are examining whether Omar or her father, who is now deceased, claimed she was a minor when she was actually an adult.
SHOCKING: Investigators SEIZED Ilhan Omar’s Phone, Computers, and PASSPORT
DOZENS of SUBPOENAS have been SERVED to Omar’s INNER CIRCLE. Will OMAR’S CITIZENSHIP be STRIPPED? Will she be DEPORTED? Is she EVEN A CITIZEN? Her citizenship came through her FATHER, who LIED about his MILITARY BACKGROUND. Omar’s father? A COLONEL in Somalia’s military DICTATORSHIP. — Jesse Watters (@JesseBWatters) October 15, 2026
The Associated Press and NBC News reported Monday that federal investigators were also reviewing Omar’s financial records, citing sources. Those records add another element to an investigation already focused on immigration documents, possible false statements, and a potential conspiracy involving additional individuals.

The Trump administration pushed for what CNN described as an unusually aggressive search of Omar’s residence. The proposed search became the subject of extended exchanges with a federal magistrate judge before the warrant received approval.
Judge Matthew Sharbaugh of the D.C. District Court ultimately placed limits on how the Justice Department could access Omar’s documents during Monday’s search. According to CNN, the restrictions reflected Omar’s position as a member of Congress and the Constitutional protections connected to that role.
The judge’s limitations did not stop federal agents from carrying out the search or seizing Omar’s phone. The reported phone seizure now stands as one of the most significant disclosed steps in an inquiry that may reach Omar’s family members and other individuals.
CNN reported that investigators are considering whether there was deception and purposeful falsification of information over a period of years. One source told the network that the government could attempt to expand the investigation into a wider conspiracy case involving a larger group.
That possibility raises the stakes beyond questions about a single filing or statement. The inquiry, as described by the reports, could focus on whether multiple individuals participated in providing false information connected to Omar’s immigration and citizenship records.
At the same time, the investigation remains focused on potential conduct, and the reports describe possible charges rather than announced criminal counts. Federal officials cited conspiracy and false statements in immigration paperwork among the charges that could be considered, according to NBC News.
The subpoenas, search, phone seizure, review of financial records, and examination of Omar’s father’s immigration paperwork show the investigation has several active components. CNN and NBC News reported that federal authorities are looking at both Omar’s conduct and information potentially involving members of her family.

And there's only one result, denaturalization and deportation. Democrats keep calling the Ilhan Omar investigation Weaponization by Trump. The judge who signed off on the warrant is a Democrat who was appointed by Democrats, who donated to Hillary and who clerked for an Obama judge. The fact that she signed off on this just shows how serious this really is, especially since she’s a sitting member of Congress. The Trump administration’s effort to strip Omar of citizenship adds another major consequence to the unfolding case. For now, investigators are examining whether statements tied to her citizenship were false and whether any alleged deception involved a coordinated group acting over multiple years.
