A terror attack on a Christian funeral service in Jordan has killed nine people and injured more than 40 others, according to authorities. The toll rose after victims died from wounds suffered when gunmen opened fire inside St. George Greek Orthodox Church on Friday.
The attack began when gunmen entered the church and started firing. One perpetrator was reportedly carrying an AK-style rifle, adding another grim detail to the assault on those gathered for the funeral service.
Witnesses told CNN that the perpetrators could be heard shouting “Allahu Akbar” during the attack. Their accounts described the words being shouted as the gunmen carried out the deadly shooting inside the church.
More than 40 individuals were injured during the attack, while nine have now died from their wounds. Authorities confirmed the rising death toll as details from the Friday shooting continued to emerge.

No suspects have been arrested so far, according to the information released following the attack. The three gunmen seen in the security footage therefore remained at large as Jordan confronted the deadly assault.
King Abdullah II, the reigning monarch of Jordan, responded publicly to the attack with a statement posted on social media. He announced that the terrorists would be met “with the harshest retaliation.”
The king’s statement placed a heavy emphasis on Jordanian unity following the attack. He rejected the idea that gunfire directed at the church could divide the country or break the bonds among its people.

“Those who delude themselves into thinking that they can divide Jordanians with their bullets have no chance in the face of our unity,” he continued.
King Abdullah II then described Jordanians across the country as sharing the same land and fate. His statement also offered condolences to the families of those killed and expressed hopes that the injured would recover quickly.
“All Jordanians, from north to south, are partners in land and fate, and nothing stands between them. Our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured.”
The monarch followed that message with another warning directed at anyone who threatens Jordan. His language promised a forceful response while declaring the value of every Jordanian life following the church attack.
“Every Jordanian life is precious, and we will strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten our nation,” he added.
The king’s remarks came as authorities faced the aftermath of an attack that left dozens wounded and nine dead. His response combined condolences for the victims with a direct promise of retaliation against the terrorists responsible.
The available accounts establish a stark sequence of events. Gunmen entered St. George Greek Orthodox Church during a Christian funeral service, opened fire, injured more than 40 people, and ultimately left nine victims dead from their wounds.
Witness testimony supplied another disturbing element, with individuals telling CNN that the perpetrators shouted “Allahu Akbar.” Separately, the security footage showed three gunmen carrying out the assault on the church.
Jordan’s monarch has responded to the attack with calls for national unity and a pledge to strike those who threaten the country. Yet despite footage showing the three gunmen, no suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.
The deadly toll now stands at nine, with more than 40 people injured during the shooting. As authorities deal with the consequences, the perpetrators shown launching the church attack have not been reported in custody.
