Texas State Rep. James Talarico, a Democrat representing the 50th District, disappeared from the campaign trail for nearly two weeks during a critical stretch of the Texas Senate race. His campaign said he had the flu, but the prolonged absence and limited public explanation left questions hanging.
Democrats and their media allies would prefer to dismiss those questions as a conservative conspiracy. Yet skepticism also came from Democratic operatives, including former Bill Clinton adviser Mark Penn and former Democrat strategist Dan Turrentine.
Talarico’s last public campaign appearance in Texas was on Sept. 26. Two days later, he attended a private fundraiser in New York City.
On Sept. 30, Talarico appeared virtually for an event he had been expected to attend in person. He announced that a Dallas urgent care had diagnosed him with the flu.

Talarico then went quiet as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton traveled across the state. That contrast only gave the controversy more oxygen during the closely contested Senate campaign.
Penn called the situation deeply unusual during an appearance on Fox News. "Oh, this is super odd. There's no question about that," Penn said.
"These are the final days of a hundred million campaign, a major effort, one of the most key Senate races, and your candidate disappears for 12, 13 days with no clear word, no messages, no ability to kind of send out some messages, has the flu? This doesn't, this really doesn't make sense."
Turrentine was similarly alarmed by how the campaign responded. Writing on his Substack, he said that allegations involving mental help would be nearly impossible to conceal during a major political campaign.

"But on the other hand, I was dumbfounded at, and very worried about, the lack of aggressive pushback from the candidate, his campaign, and outside Democrats."
That concern carried particular weight because polls showed Talarico locked in a dead even race in a deep red state. A Democrat in such a position could hardly afford to let a damaging story circulate for days without an aggressive response.
Turrentine later discussed the controversy with Sean Spicer on The Huddle. He said the continuing failure to release supporting material still made him nervous.
"It has made me nervous still today that they have not put stuff, like, I would put my primary care physician before camera," Turrentine said.
He suggested showing evidence from the physician or urgent care that treated Talarico. "Like, I would flood the zone to say, ‘You clowns, here is 8 million pieces.’ And the fact that they haven't today still makes me a little nervous,” he said.
Turrentine also made clear how severe the political consequences could become if the campaign’s explanation proved false. His concern was not merely about one candidate’s credibility, but about a Senate seat Democrats believe they can capture.
"Talarico has been very blunt. The campaign's been blunt. If you're lying, it is over, and you could cost us the United States Senate," Turrentine continued. "So, I'm praying to God that everybody is being honest and true, and the Right is out of control."
Spicer acknowledged that people are entitled to medical privacy, but said political candidates face different expectations. "But you're running for office. Obama put out his birth certificate," Spicer said.
NEW: Ex-Dem Strategist Dan Turrentine *ADMITS* he's still "NERVOUS" about James Talarico's flu story
Turrentine asserted if Talarico is being dishonest, he will lose to Ken Paxton and potentially cost Democrats the Senate altogether. He noted he's particularly concerned because Talarico has failed to provide definitive proof of his whereabouts during his disappearance. Turrentine argued Talarico could simply publish receipts and put the speculation to rest. It's strange that he hasn't done so — and it makes sense Democrats would be apprehensive. Former Clinton Advisor Mark Penn also questioned Talarico's flu story. He said he never witnessed anything like Talarico's absence in the decades he worked on campaigns — and warned it would hurt his Senate bid. Spicer argued that Talarico could provide a screenshot from the urgent care, while Turrentine suggested releasing cell phone records. Turrentine said such records are how New York tax authorities determine where someone was.
Conservatives had asked for evidence from the beginning, while Paxton’s campaign demanded proof of life. The media treated that demand as a stunt, but the campaign’s failure to quickly silence the story left even a Democrat strategist uneasy about whether the explanation was true.
The controversy remains politically dangerous because Turrentine said dishonesty could cost Democrats the Senate seat. For a campaign facing that level of risk, the continued absence of the evidence he described has kept the flu story alive.
