Inde Navarrette has offered X-Men fans an early taste of how she may sound as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot. The Obsession star tried the character’s Southern accent during a carpet interview, placing special emphasis on Rogue’s familiar “sugar” catchphrase, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Marvel officially announced at D23 earlier this year that Navarrette had joined the movie’s cast. The project will mark her debut as Rogue, also known in Marvel Comics as Anna Marie.

During an interview with Canadian news program Etalk, a reporter told Navarrette that fans were “dying to hear your Southern accent.” The reporter then asked whether she could deliver a preview of Rogue saying “sugar.”

Navarrette smiled before acknowledging that her preparation for the accent was still in its early stages. Her response made clear that the brief demonstration was not necessarily the finished version audiences will hear in the movie.

“Oh!” Navarrette said with a smile. “You know what? God bless me, I haven’t done a lot of practice. But, ah! I mean, my version’s just, ‘Sugar,'” she said while delivering the line.

The actress also indicated that she plans to continue developing the voice with input from Marvel. “But I think that, you know, I’m gonna work on it, if you don’t like it, and I’m gonna figure out and talk to the Marvel team on what we wanna do.”

Rogue’s Southern identity has roots in the Marvel Comics character. Her real name is Anna Marie, and she is originally from Mississippi, giving Navarrette a clear connection between the accent and the character’s established background.

According to Marvel, Rogue’s powers allow her to temporarily absorb the powers and memories of other people. Navarrette will now bring that character and those abilities into the MCU’s new interpretation of X-Men.

The film is the first project Navarrette attached herself to after skyrocketing to fame this summer following the rise of Obsession. Her casting places her alongside several other performers taking on familiar X-Men characters.

Sadie Sink will portray Jean Grey, while Kit Connor will play Cyclops. Christopher Abbott has been cast as Prof. X, and Samara Weaving will appear as Emma Frost.

Maya Boyd will portray Storm, Asa Germann will play Angel, and Adam Driver will take on the role of Mr. Sinister. Navarrette completes the announced group as Rogue.

Jake Schreier will direct the new X-Men movie. The film is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2028, giving Navarrette time to work with the Marvel team on the final version of Rogue’s Southern voice.

Navarrette recently discussed signing on to play Rogue during an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. She said she was looking forward to adopting the new persona while respecting the work already established by Marvel’s writers.

“I also recognize that with acting comes the freedom of being a completely different person, one of those people being Rogue, Anna Marie… paying homage, paying respect to the incredible writers that are a part of Marvel, with Jake Schreier directing, taking what they want to do, adding my own sauce, and then going from there!”

Her comments describe an approach that combines the creative direction of Schreier and Marvel’s writers with her own contribution to the role. The accent, including her delivery of “sugar,” is one element she plans to continue shaping with the team.

Outside of Marvel, Navarrette will next star in the Apple Original Films science fiction thriller The Waffle House Index. She will also serve as an executive producer on that project while preparing to join the MCU as Rogue.
