A massive fire ripped through a Quaker Oats plant in Iowa on Saturday after what authorities described as an apparent explosion. The blaze sent heavy smoke and flames pouring from the facility, but every worker escaped and no injuries were reported.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department said crews were called to the plant at about 4:45 p.m. Firefighters arriving at the scene encountered plumes of smoke and flames on the north side of the sprawling milling facility.
The fire began with an explosion inside the building, according to the department. The cause of both the explosion and the resulting blaze remained unknown as of Saturday night.

Workers who were on site managed to evacuate safely before the emergency took an even more dangerous turn. Officials did not disclose how many employees were inside the building when the explosion and fire erupted.

Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell announced on Facebook that no workers had been injured. She said the fire broke out in a section of the plant that handles products and does not typically have a heavy concentration of employees or team members.
That location inside the plant appears to have helped avert a far worse outcome. O’Donnell described the section as “not heavily populated with employees and team members,” adding, “Which of course in this case was a blessing.”
Firefighters mounted a major response as flames and thick smoke rose from the plant. Despite the size of the blaze and the reported explosion, crews brought most of the fire under control without suffering any injuries themselves.
“Firefighting operations were successful in extinguishing most of the fire,” the Cedar Rapids Fire Department said in a release posted on Facebook. The department continued working inside the building after the bulk of the flames had been knocked down.

At approximately 6:25 p.m. local time, the department said there were “still limited operations addressing final efforts and overhaul in the interior of the building.” Those efforts continued after the main firefighting operation had largely succeeded.
No firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, matching the clean bill of safety reported for the plant’s workers. The lack of injuries offered a remarkable bright spot after the apparent explosion produced such a dramatic emergency.
Witnesses nearby described a mix of fear and concern as smoke rose from the facility. Dan Gardner told KCRG that seeing the plumes left him feeling “terror, sadness [and] worry.”
“Explosions are bad, fires are bad,” Gardner told the station. His reaction reflected the alarm caused by the sight of a major local facility suddenly surrounded by flames and heavy smoke.
Gardner also emphasized the plant’s significance to the surrounding community. “Quaker Oats is a staple of this town,” he said. “So we don’t want to see them blow up.”
Texas resident Emilio Esquivel witnessed the fire and compared the spectacle to something from the big screen. He described it as “like a movie scene” while speaking with the local station about what he saw.
“Seeing something like that was just like eye-opening,” Esquivel told the station. “It was eyebrow-raising. It was crazy.” His account captured the sheer shock of watching smoke and flames surge from the massive plant.

The Quaker Oats plant is the largest milling facility in the world, according to the company’s website. The operation processes more than 2 million pounds of oats each day, giving the Saturday fire an enormous industrial backdrop.
Quaker Oats Company is owned by PepsiCo and is particularly known for its old-fashioned oats. By Saturday night, officials had reported no injuries among workers or firefighters, while the cause of the explosion and blaze remained under investigation.
