Joy Behar has been forced to step away from her ABC talk show, The View, after dislocating her shoulder in an accident backstage. The 83 year old television personality had been filling in as moderator while Whoopi Goldberg was away from the program.

Viewers noticed the latest change as soon as Thursday’s episode began. Sunny Hostin, 57, was sitting in the moderator’s chair, a spot normally occupied by Goldberg and more recently by Behar during Goldberg’s absence.

Goldberg is taking a hiatus from The View while filming a new movie in the Hamptons. With Goldberg unavailable and Behar injured, Hostin was called upon to lead the daytime discussion.

“This is a great audience , thank you! Hello, and welcome to The View ,” Hostin told the studio audience. She then explained, “So, Whoopi is still out filming a movie. And, unfortunately, our dear friend Joy dislocated her shoulder.”

The announcement prompted gasps from members of the studio audience. Hostin sought to reassure viewers by saying Behar is “recovering and will be back soon.”

Hostin also found room for a joke about unexpectedly landing in the moderator’s chair. “The two OGs are out today, so, apparently the job went to the next oldest — or, let’s say, seasoned — cohost,” she quipped. “I like seasoned better!”

Further details revealed that Behar suffered the injury on the set of The View. Her representative told Page Six that an issue with her footwear led to the backstage accident.

“Joy caught a heel backstage but is on the mend and should be back on the show mid next week,” Behar’s representative said. The statement offered an encouraging timeline for her anticipated return to the table.

The representative also clarified the condition of Behar’s injured shoulder. “Her shoulder wasn’t broken and is back in place and she is excited to be back at the table as quickly as possible,” the representative added.

Behar has appeared on The View since the program premiered in 1997, apart from a two year hiatus that began in 2013. The shoulder dislocation is not the first injury that has temporarily kept her away from the show.

In November of last year, Behar missed several days after sustaining a foot injury at home. When she returned, she explained the painful mishap directly to viewers and showed the audience her bandaged toes.

“Now, I’ve been off for a few days as you might have noticed,” Behar said. “Here’s what happened: I dropped my iPad on my foot and I broke my toe.”

Behar also described how the injury was treated. “What they do is they put the toes together, because it’s broken. And it’s very, very, very painful. I do not recommend you dropping anything on your toes.”

The latest accident comes shortly before another milestone for Behar, who is set to turn 84 next Wednesday, October 7. Despite her age and her recent injuries, she has repeatedly made clear that she has no intention of walking away from The View.

“I just signed a contract so I’ll be here for a while. I have no plans to retire,” Behar told People Magazine in 2022. She said the program remained important and described it as “the most-watched show in daytime.”

Behar also said she was happy to remain part of the program and was still enjoying herself. When discussing birthdays, however, she admitted that she “can’t get excited” and instead focused on being grateful to wake up each morning.

“I’m just glad I’m alive, okay?” Behar said. “You know, you get to a point where you wake up in the morning saying, ‘I’m still here, my God !'”

Although the article expressed sharp disagreement with Behar’s politics, it also wished her a quick recovery. Her representative’s comments indicate that Behar hopes to return to The View by the middle of next week.
