A new report claims James Talarico spent part of his unexplained two-week absence from the campaign trail at the Lindner Center of HOPE, an inpatient mental health treatment facility and psychiatric hospital in Mason, Ohio. His campaign had attributed the disappearance to the flu.
Talarico vanished from public view after a September 28 fundraiser in New York with actor Robert DeNiro and allies of New York City Mayor Zohran Mandani. He was also raising money from the Human Rights Campaign in New York.
The candidate eventually resurfaced Friday, October 9, at the ACL music festival in Austin, Texas. His team responded to questions about the prolonged absence by dismissing those who had speculated about his whereabouts.
“Hate to disappoint the conspiracy theorists, but James is still alive and meeting with voters at ACL today,” a Talarico spokesperson said. The statement did not address the report that Talarico had received treatment at the Ohio facility.

President Donald Trump rejected the flu explanation while speaking at a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee. He mocked the length of Talarico’s reported illness and said, “TalaFreako Had the Longest Flu Ever Recorded… I Don’t Think it Was the Flu.”
Trump had previously said that “bad rumors are coming out” while Talarico remained out of public view. Speculation during the absence included the possibility of a mental health crisis or an illness more serious than the flu.
Political strategist Rhein Amacher and journalist Nick Sortor called the Lindner Center of HOPE seeking information about Talarico. According to the report, an employee told them Talarico had been “just discharged” from the facility on Saturday.
BREAKING EXCLUSIVE: Ohio mental hospital CONFIRMS James Talarico was discharged from the facility earlier this week
The “flu” thing was a BIG FAT LIE Following reporting by @SaraGonzalesTX and @CarolineWren, a hospital employee told @RheinAmacher and I that Talarico had in fact been a patient at the Lindner Center of Hope near Cincinnati, Ohio, which specializes in around-the-clock mental health treatment. While I sympathize with those dealing with mental health crises, this man is CLEARLY not suited to become a US Senator representing over 30 MILLION TEXANS. The job doesn’t get easier after being elected — it only gets MORE stressful. And Talarico clearly can’t handle it. I pray he gets the help he needs, but Texans need a real representative they can rely on. — Nick Sortor (@nicksortor) October 11, 2026
The report suggested that Talarico seemingly had been discharged Friday, though his departure may not have been immediately processed or finalized in the facility’s system. The employee reportedly confirmed that Talarico had been at the facility.

Sortor subsequently announced the reported development on X. Amacher also posted images of his telephone logs, which he said showed calls placed to the Lindner Center of HOPE.
The disclosure immediately raised privacy questions because federal HIPAA laws protect patient health information. The legality of the employee reportedly confirming that Talarico’s name appeared in the facility’s system remains unclear.
GOP fundraiser Caroline Wren had raised questions Saturday about Talarico’s travel. She said he appeared to have taken a private plane from Hamilton, Ohio, to Austin, Texas, on Friday morning, shortly before appearing at the ACL music festival.
What are the chances that a private plane took off from Austin and flew to tiny Hamilton airport in Ohio which is 20 mins from the Lindner Center, a private inpatient mental health treatment facility, and then turned around and flew back to Austin landing yesterday morning at 10:24am right before James Talarico magically reappears at the Austin City Limits music festival that afternoon? Lindner Center also happens to be the same facility that Talarico’s good friend and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo spent 7 weeks in when she had a mental breakdown 3 years ago…
So many coincidences! — Caroline Wren (@CarolineWren) October 10, 2026
Wren also noted that Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo stayed at the same facility for nearly two months during an episode in 2023. The report additionally noted that the Lindner Center hosts drag shows, prompting another round of mockery aimed at Talarico.

Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt addressed the disappearance Friday. Pratt said Talarico deserved “empathy,” while arguing that the candidate’s campaign advisers deserved to be mocked for misleading Texans and attempting to conceal what happened.
“Campaigns are brutal, and not everybody is cut out for it. You need very thick skin,” Pratt wrote while discussing the demands of running for political office.
“As much as I don't want Talarico anywhere near government, I also don't want wish him harm, and no political office is worth having a breakdown. His awful advisors are at fault for this,” Pratt continued.
“They pushed him to be something he isn't, and it didn't work,” Pratt concluded. His criticism focused heavily on the campaign advisers who publicly maintained that Talarico had merely been dealing with the flu.
My sources are telling me Talarico is in a mental health facility. His campaign has stopped actively planning events in the vital homestretch of the campaign.
If this is true, this is actually a time to pray for Talarico. We should, of course, savagely mock his smug, awful campaign advisors, by all means...and while yes, of course, this would be disqualifying for Talarico's aspirations to be a Texas Senator, we must hold empathy for anyone undergoing crisis. Campaigns are brutal, and not everybody is cut out for it. You need very thick skin. As much as I don't want Talarico anywhere near government, I also don't want wish him harm, and no political office is worth having a breakdown. His awful advisors are at fault for this. They pushed him to be something he isn't, and it didn't work. I'm praying that this isn't true, and he's OK. You want to win these fights on the battlefield of ideas, not the minefield of poor health. — Spencer Pratt (@spencerpratt) October 9, 2026
The report said the Talarico campaign had been contacted for confirmation and a statement. At the time of publication, the campaign had not provided a response addressing the psychiatric hospital report or explaining the conflicting account surrounding his absence.
