Alanis Morissette has publicly addressed her sexuality, identifying herself as pansexual during a podcast conversation about her past experiences with men and her attraction to people of various genders. The singer made the disclosure on the Tuesday, November 3, episode of “Handsome.”

“I’m pansexual, so, yeah,” the 90s icon, 52, said during the episode. She appeared alongside podcast cohosts Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin.

The subject emerged after Feimster, 46, asked whether the difficult ways men had treated Morissette in the past ever made her “want to be a lesbian at any point.” Those experiences with men inspired several of Morissette’s most beloved songs.

Morissette responded by confirming that she is attracted to people of various genders. Her answer appeared to surprise Notaro, 55, who interrupted with a direct follow up question.

“Wait, you’re not really pansexual, are you?” Notaro asked, seemingly taken aback that Morissette had not mentioned her sexual orientation earlier in the discussion. Morissette immediately clarified her answer.

“I am,” the singer said. Morissette then joked that she had waited until the podcast episode was nearly over to discuss her sexuality because she likes “to leave it for the epilogue.”

Pansexuality refers to a sexuality in which someone is attracted to other people for their individuality, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. Morissette’s public identification follows previous remarks she has made about romantic encounters with women.

In 2008, the “Jagged Little Pill” singer spoke to The Advocate about exploring her sexuality. She characterized that kind of personal exploration as a “rite of passage.”

“What can I sell you about it?” Morissette told the outlet while discussing comments she had made during an appearance on Howard Stern’s radio show. “I think it’s a beautiful rite of passage for everyone to play with their sexuality at some point, so I did exactly that. And it was great!”

Morissette also described the connection she had long felt with the LGBTQ+ community. She said that the love she received from the community stretched back to her youth and included important people in her life.

“I’ve felt love from the gay community since I was really young because all my friends were gay,” she said. “My first manager was gay, and I used to go to nightclubs with him in New York when I was 14.”

“There’s a passion, a presence, and a curiosity with a lot of gay people that I meet, and that aliveness is such a special quality to me,” Morissette continued. At the time of her conversation with Stern, 72, she considered herself to be “pretty heterosexual” while experimenting with women.

Morissette also connected that experience to her 2000 cameo on HBO’s “Sex and the City.” Her character kisses Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, during a game of spin the bottle.

“I reached out to them and I said, ‘Might it be a nice time for Carrie to experience a lesbian moment?” Morissette recalled during a September episode of Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast. “And they said, ‘Why, yes. We were thinking the same thing.’”

In that episode, Carrie is dating a pansexual man who has former boyfriends and girlfriends, a situation that sends the sex columnist into an existential spiral. Morissette’s character and Carrie share their kiss during the party game.

Morissette also discussed what it was like to kiss Parker, 61, while filming the series. She remembered the on screen moment as “easy” and “buoyant.”

“I do recall kissing her,” Morissette said. “It was very pleasant.”

Her comments on “Handsome” mark a more explicit public description of her sexuality than the way she characterized herself during her earlier conversation with Stern. This time, Morissette answered the question simply and directly before adding a playful remark about saving the revelation for the end.
