U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalized after experiencing a stroke Saturday afternoon. The 53-year-old lawmaker remains under medical observation following his transfer to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Murphy first noticed numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where medical personnel determined that he had suffered a stroke.
After that diagnosis, Murphy was transferred to Johns Hopkins for additional monitoring and treatment. His office said he was responding well as doctors continued evaluating his condition.
Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, confirmed the details in a statement released after the hospitalization. She described the symptoms he experienced and the sequence that led him to seek medical care.

“Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” Herwitt said.
Herwitt also offered an encouraging assessment of Murphy’s condition following his transfer. According to the statement, he was awake, alert, and making progress while receiving treatment.
“He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. The doctors are encouraged by his progress; he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”
Murphy’s staff began notifying associates about his hospitalization and diagnosis Saturday afternoon. The notifications came as the senator entered medical care and his scheduled political activity was disrupted.

Before the stroke, Murphy had been traveling to campaign events on behalf of Democratic candidates. His recent stops included Michigan, Minnesota, and Florida.
The senator had also been scheduled to appear at additional events in New Hampshire on Sunday. He was unable to attend those events following his hospitalization and transfer to Johns Hopkins.
Murphy has been described in reporting as a potential candidate during the 2028 presidential cycle. He also serves as a junior member of the Senate Democratic leadership team under Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The hospitalization interrupted a period of campaign travel for the Connecticut Democrat. His office has not announced when he might resume those activities or return to his regular Senate responsibilities.
Murphy is among several members of Congress who have publicly reported strokes in recent years. Senators Chris Van Hollen of Maryland and Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico were hospitalized after strokes in 2022.
John Fetterman, who was then a Senate candidate in Pennsylvania, was also hospitalized after suffering a stroke that year. The source did not provide additional comparisons concerning the type or severity of those medical incidents.
Colleagues from both political parties responded to the news about Murphy’s condition. Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois were among those issuing statements wishing him a full recovery.

President Trump: “How bad of a stroke is it? Do you know?” Reporter: “I don’t know.” President Trump: “Well, at the right time I would [have a reaction to that]. Certainly we don’t like to hear a thing like that. I just heard about it inside. He's a pretty young guy. A little surprised to hear it. No, nobody wants to have that.” Trump truly cares about people! Even Democrats who constantly attack him. — RedWave Press (@RedWavePress) November 1, 2026
