Violence and looting swept across France on Saturday as the government blamed radicals from the far left for attacking security forces during another round of mass demonstrations. Hundreds were arrested, police officers were injured, and several cities imposed Halloween curfews.

The “Act III” protests drew about 320,000 people nationwide, including 70,000 in Paris, according to authorities. Union officials offered a higher estimate, claiming roughly half a million people joined demonstrations backed by trade unions and parties on the far left.

Jean Luc Mélenchon’s France Insoumise, also known as France in Rebellion or LFI, was among the parties supporting the protests. The demonstrations unfolded in Paris and numerous other French cities on October 31, 2026.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said that “as expected, in each procession groups of thugs and looters led by the radical ultra-left movement attacked the security forces.”

“We have seen extremely violent groups of several hundred individuals attack the security forces in Marseille, Nantes, Angers, Tours, Rennes, etc,” Nuñez said. He added that rioters used fireworks, cobblestones, and Molotov cocktails against police.

By 9 pm local time, the Interior Ministry reported that 565 people had been arrested, with the total expected to climb through the night. Paris Police had warned before the demonstrations that the city could face an “insurrectional situation.”

Police said hardened radicals from the far left could join opportunistic youths from multicultural suburbs to create mayhem. Those warnings hardly proved misplaced as flames, projectiles, clashes, and smoke consumed parts of the demonstrations.

One of the most disturbing scenes emerged in Paris, where video showed a police officer engulfed in flames after a Molotov cocktail struck him. The officer appeared to escape largely unharmed, although reports mentioned an ankle injury.

At least three officers were injured by Molotov cocktails during the Saturday violence. The footage of the burning officer quickly drew condemnation from National Rally presidential candidate Marine Le Pen.

“The images of a police officer engulfed in flames after being targeted by incendiary devices are unbearable. The perpetrators of this attack must be found and sentenced with the utmost severity. Tonight, we are thinking of all the security and rescue forces that will be mobilised late into the night to protect our fellow citizens from the hordes of the far left,” Le Pen said.

Her deputy, Jordan Bardella, demanded severe punishment for anyone who throws an incendiary device at law enforcement. “These devices are made to kill, and their perpetrators must rot in prison for very long years. Such acts have no place in the French Republic.”

Looting also erupted in Marseille, where authorities arrested five people after a Foot Locker store was looted. Two additional businesses, including a wine store and a delicatessen, were damaged during the disorder.

Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan, a member of the Socialist Party, condemned those exploiting the demonstrations to create trouble. He said hundreds of thousands had marched over the high cost of living and conditions for young people, while insisting the political demands required responses.

Payan said Marseille’s municipal police were fully mobilized to protect residents and property. He argued that neither the city nor demands expressed peacefully by demonstrators should become victims of people seeking chaos and violence.

Around 70,000 police officers and gendarmes were deployed across France as authorities prepared for unrest stretching into Halloween night. Some cities responded by imposing curfews aimed at limiting further disorder.

Central Paris areas around the Place de la République and Châtelet Les Halles were placed under a curfew from 11 pm until 6 am Sunday. Police also used vehicles to block protesters or potential rioters from entering the area around the Bastille.

In Nice, conservative Mayor Éric Ciotti announced a curfew for unaccompanied minors from 10 pm until 6 am to “prevent overflows during Halloween.” Curfew measures were also reportedly imposed in parts of Grenoble, Lille, Douai, Denain, Wattignies, Valenciennes, and Marly.

The unrest has become an issue in upcoming United States midterm elections. President Donald Trump warned that the French model represents what Democrats have planned for America.

Vice President JD Vance offered a blistering assessment earlier in the month. “Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion. They ignored fundamental questions of assimilation and compatibility. They were told it would lead to this, and they didn’t listen.”
