Comedy Central’s Daily Show host Jon Stewart called on Democrats to reject Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as Senate Majority Leader following their sweeping midterm election victory. Stewart argued that the party must abandon its established leadership habits and focus on governing.

Speaking on The Weekly Show podcast, Stewart doubled down on his previous opposition to impeachment hearings. He presented the election result as an opportunity for Democrats to address what he described as the old thinking that contributed to the current political situation.

“By the way, that’s job one of this opportunity,” Stewart said. He added, “Job one of this opportunity is to tear down the obstacles and old way of thinking that got us into this mess.”

Stewart was blunt about what he did not want Democrats to prioritize. “Someone has to meet this moment and they have got to show — and this moment is not, ‘oh, we get to impeach everybody,’ like fuck that,” he said.

Instead, Stewart urged Democrats to use their victory to govern. “Like, you have an opportunity to actually govern,” he said, before telling them, “Do it. Take it.”

Stewart also demanded that Democrats remove seniority from their leadership system. He argued that doing so would help the party govern effectively after its midterm success.

“One of the first things you need to do is remove that system of seniority from Democratic politics,” Stewart said. He then declared, “It is a bullshit system, and it needs to go.”

His criticism quickly turned toward Schumer and suggestions that the senator deserved recognition for the victory. Stewart rejected that assessment and pointed to Schumer’s relationship with some of the people involved in the election success.

“Chuck Schumer deserves, Chuck Schumer fought tooth and nail against half of these fucking people!” Stewart said. He also argued that Schumer failed to grasp both the present stakes and what would be required going forward.

“And even if he didn’t, he does not understand the urgency of the moment and what the future demands,” Stewart said. He followed that judgment with, “I truly believe that.”

Stewart had previously cautioned Democrats against pursuing impeachment of the current president. He feared the process would become a theatrical confrontation that produced little substance, accountability, or meaningful results.

“We’ve already shown there’s no accountability,” Stewart said. He argued that he instead wanted to see “a full government effort on rebalancing this economy.”

Stewart described the economic situation as requiring triage and called for the government to concentrate on labor and capital. “Wall it off so it doesn’t infect the rest of the economy and spend a total government effort at rebalancing labor vs. capital with real ideas,” he said.

The Daily Show host was equally dismissive of another extended round of congressional hearings. “I don’t want to see a fucking five-act performative play of House hearings,” he said.

“I just don’t want to see it,” Stewart continued. He added, “I don’t want to see everybody having the opportunity to pantomime accountability because you know they’re actually not going to bring it.”

While Stewart welcomed investigations, he ultimately believed Trump would “run out the clock.” He said investigations should remain behind more urgent problems on the country’s list of priorities.

“You want to do some investigations into some shit, that’s great, but on the triage list of what’s wrong in this country, it is, I’m sorry, sir, you’re gonna have to stay in the waiting room because this guy just got shot and it sounds to me like you just have a sore throat,” Stewart said. “Do the sh*t that is actually killing people right now.”

Stewart closed his argument by questioning what previous hearings had accomplished. “If you couldn’t bring accountability to January 6 in two years, what confidence do any of us have that you’re going to be able to untangle Eric and Don’s drone company?” he asked.
