Stephen A. Smith delivered a blistering warning to Democrats, arguing that their response to midterm victories could quickly turn political success into a damaging spectacle. He said treating the results as a mandate would be a serious mistake, as reported by Townhall.
Smith warned that Democrats could spend the next two years creating chaos for Americans and targeting the Trump administration.
“I believe that the Democrats are going to be arrogant enough to believe it's a mandate as opposed to a vote against Trump,” Smith said.
Smith’s distinction was central to his criticism. He portrayed the election result not as an enthusiastic endorsement of Democrats, but as opposition to Trump that Democrats could easily misread once they reclaimed power.

“There are going to be enough of them that think that it was a vote for them, their mandate, that they've reclaimed power, and they're going to be stupid and arrogant enough to go after him with stuff like impeachment. They're definitely going to try to impeach Pete Hegseth.”
The prospect of impeachment was only one piece of the confrontation Smith predicted. He also named Marco Rubio and Trump as possible targets of investigations once Democrats were in a position to act.
“They're definitely going to go after Marco Rubio with an investigation. They're probably going to do the same with Trump, and we're going to be inundated with similar chaos to what was transpiring leading up to the years between when he departed in 2020, and he reclaimed the presidency in 2024.”
Smith connected that possible wave of investigations to the political turmoil surrounding Trump’s departure in 2020 and his return to the presidency in 2024. In his view, reviving that atmosphere would carry major electoral consequences.

“And that same kind of chaos is going to cost them the presidency in 2028, in all likelihood, to Marco Rubio or Ron DeSantis,” he continued. “That is what I believe.”
His prediction placed Rubio and Ron DeSantis at the center of a possible 2028 outcome. Smith did not present the consequences as certain, but he said that a renewed period of political chaos would likely work against Democrats.
Smith then sharpened his criticism, calling such a course the worst possible choice for the party. He argued that investigations and impeachment efforts would look like a repetition of the same political approach voters had already rejected.
“I don't know about the rest of you all, but I think it would be the stupidest thing that the Democrats could possibly do. It's more of the same.”
For Smith, the problem was not merely that Democrats might overreach after winning. He said their response could remind voters why they chose a different political direction during the 2024 election.
“It will remind the American people of exactly why they went in a different direction in 2024 to begin with,” Smith said.
Stephen A. Smith predicts Democrats will be STUPID and ARROGANT enough to treat the midterms as a mandate and start impeaching Trump’s cabinet.
If they go down that road, he says, it will BACKFIRE in 2028 and hand Marco Rubio or Ron DeSantis the presidency. PBD: "Let's play the 'let's say' game. The Dems win the House and they win the Senate. One, what do you think they'll do? And if they do that, what will happen in 2028?" STEPHEN A. SMITH: "I believe that the Democrats are going to be arrogant enough to believe it's a mandate as opposed to a vote against Trump." "There are going to be enough of them that think that it was a vote for them, their mandate, that they've reclaimed power, and they're going to be stupid and arrogant enough to go after him with stuff like impeachment. The warning therefore focused on both interpretation and strategy. Smith argued that confusing opposition to Trump with affirmative support for Democrats could encourage the party to embrace impeachment and investigations rather than recognize the limits of its victory.
Smith’s comments presented that eagerness as a trap rather than a triumph. The more Democrats treated the midterm result as unrestricted approval, he argued, the more likely they would be to recreate the chaos that could hurt them in 2028.
