New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is drawing criticism after encouraging residents to sign up as paid snow shovelers ahead of a major winter storm while requiring applicants to present identification documents to qualify for the work, as reported by Newsmax.
As the city prepares for its second significant snowstorm of the year, Mamdani announced that New Yorkers could earn $19.14 per hour clearing streets and sidewalks.

The initiative is intended to bolster the city’s snow response efforts as heavy snowfall approaches.
During a news conference, Mamdani outlined the process for those interested in participating. The Department of Sanitation has readied 33 vans and two buses to transport shovelers to neighborhoods where assistance is needed.

"Just show up at your local sanitation garage between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. tomorrow with your paperwork, which is accessible online at NYC.gov/now, and you can get started right away," Mamdani said.
Zohran Mamdani is now begging New Yorkers to register and help shovel the disgusting snow all around the city.

According to the city’s online registration page, applicants must meet several requirements. Individuals must be at least 18 years old, eligible to work in the United States, and physically capable of performing heavy labor.
The registration process also requires two small photographs, two original forms of identification, and a Social Security card.
The identification requirement has prompted reaction on social media, particularly from critics who point to Mamdani’s affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America.

The organization has opposed voter identification laws, including the Republican-backed SAVE America Act, which would require voters to present photo identification when casting ballots.
Some online users questioned why identification is required for temporary snow removal work but not universally required at polling places in New York.
"This is why consistency in governance matters. Rules shouldn't change depending on the political objective," one social media user wrote.
Another added: "I believe this to be taunting their hypocrisy on ID, it just has to be."
Under current New York law, voters generally are not required to present photo identification at polling locations.
However, individuals registering to vote must provide a driver’s license number, a state identification number, or the last four digits of their Social Security number.
If election officials are unable to verify a voter’s identity during registration, that individual may be required to present an accepted form of identification when appearing at the polls.
The Democratic Socialists of America recently voiced opposition to the SAVE America Act, which would mandate photo identification for voting nationwide.
As the storm approaches, city officials continue to prepare equipment and personnel for snow removal operations. Mamdani’s administration has emphasized the need for additional manpower to ensure sidewalks and streets remain accessible.
The debate over identification requirements has unfolded as the city mobilizes resources to address the incoming weather system.
Residents interested in participating in the snow shoveling program have been directed to complete the required paperwork and appear at designated sanitation garages within the specified time frame.
