A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent shot and wounded an armed individual near the U.S.-Canada border in northern New Hampshire early Sunday, authorities said.

CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott confirmed that the incident occurred in Pittsburg, a small town along the Canadian frontier.

According to Scott, the agent returned fire during the encounter and struck the individual, who has not been publicly identified. The person was transported to a nearby hospital, and their condition was not immediately known.

“The FBI Boston Field Office will be investigating the incident.

The FBI said the shooting occurred at approximately 1 a.m. Sunday.

In a preliminary assessment, the bureau stated that the individual opened fire on the CBP agent, who then returned fire.

The FBI’s Evidence Response Team was deployed to process the scene.

Officials have not released additional details about what led to the confrontation at the northern border crossing area.

The New Hampshire incident unfolded just hours before a separate security breach at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

The U.S. Secret Service said the Florida incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. when a man made an “unauthorized entry” through the resort’s north gate as another vehicle was exiting the property.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw identified the suspect as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of North Carolina.

Authorities said Martin was carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can when he was confronted by Secret Service agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

“They confronted a white male that was carrying a gas can and a shotgun. He was ordered to drop those two pieces of equipment that he had with him – at which time he put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” Bradshaw told reporters.

“At that point in time, the deputy and the two Secret Service agents fired their weapons and neutralized the threat.”

Bradshaw said the suspect did not exchange any words with officers who instructed him to “drop the items.”

Authorities have not publicly disclosed further information about Martin’s condition or any possible motive behind the breach.

The Secret Service confirmed that its personnel were involved in the response along with local law enforcement.

Federal officials have not indicated any connection between the early morning border shooting in New Hampshire and the incident at Mar-a-Lago.

Both events remain under active investigation by federal authorities.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the Pittsburg, New Hampshire shooting, while federal and local agencies continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the Mar-a-Lago security breach.

Officials have emphasized that the inquiries are ongoing and that additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Both incidents occurred within a roughly 30-minute window early Sunday morning and involved federal law enforcement officers responding to armed individuals.

At this time, authorities have not provided further details regarding the weapons involved in the New Hampshire case beyond confirming that the individual opened fire on a CBP agent.
