California taxpayers have been paying for security assigned to former Vice President Kamala Harris as she travels across the United States promoting her memoir, according to reporting from KCRA.

Since September, dozens of California Highway Patrol officers have been assigned to Harris as she travels during the promotional tour for her book, “107 Days.” The officers have accompanied Harris at stops across the country and are expected to continue providing security throughout the tour.

State officials have not publicly disclosed the exact number of officers assigned to Harris or the total cost to taxpayers associated with the security detail.

“All I know is it’s a lot, it is a significant amount of money,” Tom Lackey, a Republican and retired California Highway Patrol officer, told KCRA.

Harris, who previously served as California’s attorney general before becoming vice president, is traveling to multiple cities as part of the book’s promotional campaign.

Former vice presidents typically receive federal protection for six months after leaving office. President Joe Biden extended Harris’ Secret Service protection through July 2026 at Harris’ request. That protection was later canceled by the Trump administration. The White House ultimately decided to extend Harris’ protection through September 2025.

Lackey said the security arrangement reflects concerns about the current environment and the potential for threats directed at high-profile public figures.

“We’re living in an unstable environment right now, and it’s really hard to predict circumstances and people’s behavior, and so she deserves that kind of protection,” Lackey added.

He also noted that Harris’ previous role as California’s attorney general means state law enforcement agencies may provide protection if credible threats are identified.

However, according to reporting cited by KCRA, a Secret Service threat intelligence assessment did not find credible evidence of a threat directed at Harris.

Harris began the tour for her memoir in September. The book, titled “107 Days,” details her short-lived 2024 presidential campaign following the decision by former President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race.

The tour launched in New York City on Sept. 24 and has since traveled through several major cities across the United States.

Stops on the tour have included Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, Portland, Nashville and Miami. The schedule also includes international appearances in Toronto and London.

Following strong ticket demand for the events scheduled in 2025, Harris expanded the tour with additional dates scheduled for 2026.

The additional dates are set to begin in New Orleans on Jan. 13 and conclude in Anaheim, California, on Apr. 10.

While promoting the memoir, Harris has also faced questions about her political future and whether she may seek another run for the presidency.

During a recent podcast appearance, host and author Sharon McMahon asked Harris directly about the possibility.

“Everybody here wants to know the answer. Will you run again?” McMahon asked.

Harris responded that she has not yet made a final decision about whether she will seek the White House again.

“I haven’t decided yet,” she said.

She then added another brief remark about the possibility.

“I might.”

The book tour and continued public appearances have kept Harris in the national spotlight as speculation continues about whether she will pursue another presidential campaign in the future.
