The FBI has opened an investigation into former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent over allegations that he leaked classified information, according to three sources familiar with the matter.
The probe began before Kent left his government post, sources told Fox News Digital.
Details about the scope of the investigation have not been publicly disclosed, and it remains unclear what specific information is under review.

Kent resigned Tuesday from his position as the nation’s top counterterrorism official.
His departure followed internal disagreements over U.S. policy toward Iran, which he outlined in a public statement explaining his decision to step down.
In that statement, Kent said he “cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war,” adding that he believed Iran did not pose an immediate threat.
He also argued that the conflict represented a departure from the administration’s previous stance aimed at avoiding extended military engagements in the Middle East.

The timing of Kent’s resignation has drawn attention as federal investigators continue examining whether any classified material may have been improperly disclosed during his tenure.
However, officials have not confirmed whether the FBI inquiry is tied to concerns raised within the administration prior to his exit or to a separate matter entirely.
A senior administration official previously told Fox News Digital that Kent was a “known leaker” and had been removed from intelligence briefings months before his resignation.
The official did not provide further details regarding those actions or whether they were directly connected to the ongoing investigation.
Kent’s role placed him at the center of the nation’s counterterrorism efforts, overseeing intelligence coordination and analysis related to threats facing the United States.
His leadership at the National Counterterrorism Center began in early 2025, following his appointment to the position.
Before taking on that role, Kent built a career in national security, serving as an Army Green Beret and later as a CIA paramilitary officer.
His background in both military and intelligence operations positioned him as a key figure within the broader counterterrorism framework.
Kent is also a Gold Star spouse, a designation given to family members of service members who died in military service.
His personal background and professional experience had been highlighted during his appointment to the position.

At this stage, no charges have been announced, and the FBI has not publicly commented on the investigation.
It is also unclear how long the inquiry has been underway or what findings, if any, have been made.
The situation remains under review as federal authorities continue gathering information.
