New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism from left-leaning activists and political figures less than 100 days after taking office, with disputes emerging over issues including Israel policy, transgender-related advocacy, and labor concerns, as reported by The New York Post.
According to reports, Mamdani has been confronted at public events and outside his official residence at Gracie Mansion, with criticism coming largely from individuals and groups aligned with progressive and socialist movements.
Some critics have described the mayor as insufficiently aligned with their expectations. Kshama Sawant, who is currently running for Congress, has publicly contrasted her positions with Mamdani’s.

In a February post on X, she wrote, “The AOC-ification of Mamdani has taken place at lightning speed,” referencing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Sawant added, “There is only one way to break with this endless cycle of disappointment and betrayals from so-called ‘progressive’ and ‘socialist’ Democrats: breaking with both bloodstained parties of war and genocide.”

Other activists have also criticized Mamdani’s approach.
Christian Smalls, co-founder of the Amazon Labor Union, wrote on X in March, “Zohran is going to break ppls heart way more then AOC [sic].”
He added, “He plays the fence so well [that] one day he can sound like a leader of resistance, the next a shill for Israel,” and, “He’s nothing but another career politician Democrat. Politicians are not our saviors… I’m with the resistance through and through.”

Online criticism has also focused on Mamdani’s policies. Some users on Bluesky criticized his approach to transgender-related issues, while others questioned his decision in February to resume sweeps of homeless encampments.
In addition to online commentary, protests have taken place outside Gracie Mansion following reports that Mamdani’s mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, attended a gathering at the home of Ghislaine Maxwell.
Demonstrators gathered outside the residence, with one protester shouting, “That’s right, we know about your mom,” followed by:
“We was with you, Zohran, we voted for you, Zohran, we advocated for you, Zohran, we advocated for you. You ain’t do nothing but get up in there and lie to us! … Shame! Shame! Shame!”

Labor-related issues have also drawn protests. Demonstrators have organized sit-ins calling on Mamdani to support legislation aimed at ending 24-hour shifts for home health aides, an issue he had addressed during his campaign.
In one video from the protest, participants said, “Zohran, we all voted for you because you promised to stand up for working people and end the abusive 24-hour workday … Why have you said nothing? Instead, you’re parroting the racist, sexist lie that immigrant women choose 24-hour workdays.”

Criticism from the left was also present during Mamdani’s campaign. At a June event, a protester challenged his position on Israel, shouting, “My family is in Palestine right now, constantly under attack, and I’m hearing you say ‘Free Palestine’ but also ‘Israel has the right to exist,’” and adding, “Don’t be hypocritical!”

Additional criticism has come from groups such as the Revolutionary Communists of America, which stated during the campaign that “communists can’t support Zohran Mamdani,” adding, “Despite his nice-sounding words, Zohran is ultimately a reformist seeking to make minor tweaks to the New York City budget,” and, “He is deceiving the working class.”
The criticism spans multiple platforms and issues, with activists continuing to raise concerns about the mayor’s policies and decisions during his early time in office.
