A train collision in Denmark early Thursday left five people critically injured and prompted a large emergency response near the town of Hillerød, authorities said, as reported by Fox News.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. near a level crossing about 25 miles north of Copenhagen. Officials said a total of 38 passengers were aboard the two trains involved at the time of the collision.

According to a spokesperson for North Zealand police, the incident has been classified as a major event. Emergency responders, including personnel from the Greater Copenhagen Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash was reported.

Authorities said five individuals sustained critical injuries in the collision. In addition, roughly a dozen other passengers were reported to have minor injuries. Medical teams worked at the site to assess victims and coordinate transport to nearby hospitals.

Images from the scene showed significant damage to the front sections of both trains. Despite the impact, officials confirmed that both trains remained upright on the tracks following the collision.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash. Initial reports indicate that the trains collided near a level crossing, but authorities have not yet released details about what led to the incident.

Trine Egetved, mayor of the nearby municipality of Gribskov, addressed the situation in a statement shared on Facebook. She said some of the injured were transported to hospitals by air due to the severity of their conditions.

Egetved also noted that the rail line where the crash occurred is frequently used by local residents, including commuters and schoolchildren traveling in and out of the area.

Emergency crews remained at the scene as authorities continued their investigation. Rail traffic in the area was impacted as officials worked to secure the site and assess the damage.
