Over the past year, speculation has continued to grow that Barack and Michelle Obama may be heading toward divorce.

Reports have suggested that the couple has been living “separate lives” for some time, raising questions about the state of their marriage.

In a recent interview, Barack directly addressed some of the chatter, admitting that there has been “genuine tension” between him and Michelle. His comments come as public speculation about the couple’s relationship shows no sign of slowing down.

The former president, 64, revealed to The New Yorker that his continued involvement in politics has created friction at home. He explained that his criticism of former President Donald Trump has drawn him back into political life “more than I would have preferred.”

According to Barack, his engagement in political discussions has put strain on his relationship with Michelle, 62.

“She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives,” he said in the interview.

He went on to admit how this dynamic has affected their household.

“It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her,” Barack continued. “I’m more forgiving of it, in the sense that I understand why people feel that way.”

While reflecting on public expectations, Barack suggested that people view him differently compared to other former presidents. “They don’t care about the fact that no other ex-president was the main surrogate for the Party for four election cycles after they left office,” he added.

The discussion comes at a complicated time for the Obamas, who have faced ongoing divorce rumors for more than a year.

The talk escalated in January of last year when Michelle missed both the funeral of Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of Donald Trump. Barack attended both events alone, which only fueled further gossip.

Political commentator Meghan McCain added to the conversation during an appearance on reporter Tara Palmeri’s podcast in 2025, saying she had heard similar divorce rumors “by reputable people.” She clarified that these rumors were not coming from gossip outlets but from “very serious journalists.”

Tara responded that she had heard similar claims, explaining, “Like I just heard that they live separate lives.” Clips from their podcast quickly circulated online, keeping the story alive.

Around the same time, Michelle launched her IMO podcast. On several episodes, she has spoken candidly about her husband, sometimes in ways that commentators claimed revealed signs of frustration.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson commented that Michelle “really dislikes her husband, and it’s super obvious.”

Carlson said he was not being catty, but rather commenting on what he saw as “unbelievable hostility.” Megyn Kelly agreed with the assessment, arguing that “everything Michelle says about her husband is negative.”

To counter the rampant speculation, Barack appeared as a guest on Michelle’s podcast in July of last year. During the episode, both attempted to dismiss the divorce rumors, emphasizing their enduring bond.

Michelle said, “There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quitting my man,” stressing that they had faced hard times but had grown stronger together.

Barack added that he was often unaware of the gossip until others mentioned it. “Then somebody will mention it to me and I’m all like, ‘what are you talking about?’” he said. The couple’s conversation was intended to show unity, but it did not end public suspicion.

Despite their efforts to reassure fans, many observers remain skeptical about the strength of their relationship. Barack’s new remark about “genuine tension” is likely to keep the speculation alive rather than ending it.

As rumors continue to spread, only time will reveal whether the marriage between Barack and Michelle can withstand the ongoing pressure and curiosity surrounding their private lives.
