An 88-year-old Carnival cruise passenger died Saturday after authorities said she lost control of her mobility scooter and drove off a pier while visiting a private cruise destination in the Bahamas, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident happened shortly before noon while the Carnival Celebration was docked at Celebration Key, Carnival’s private island destination in the Caribbean.

According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the elderly American woman “reportedly lost control” of her mobility scooter and drove off the edge of the pier into the water.

Authorities said the woman is believed to have struck her head against the hull of the ship before entering the water. Police are investigating the case as a suspected drowning.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the passenger’s death in a statement released after the incident.

“Carnival teams responded, successfully retrieving her from the water. Despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive,” the company said.

“Our thoughts are with her family,” the statement added.

Fellow passenger Linsy Egersheim told Miami television station WSVN that the atmosphere aboard the ship changed after the accident.

“It’s vacation, you don’t expect bad things to happen, but definitely getting back on the boat was really sad,” Egersheim said.

“I mean, we walked past the scooter, and all you could think about is that poor lady.”

The Carnival Celebration had been nearing the end of a weeklong round-trip voyage departing from Florida and traveling through several Caribbean destinations before returning to port.

According to CruiseMapper, the vessel departed again on Sunday for another scheduled voyage.

Celebration Key opened in July 2025 as Carnival’s exclusive island destination in the Bahamas. The reported cost of the development was approximately $600 million.

The location has previously seen other deadly incidents involving cruise passengers.

In August 2025, a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman both died in separate drowning incidents on the island within hours of one another, according to reports at the time.

Authorities in the Bahamas have not released the identity of the 88-year-old passenger pending notification of family members.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said the investigation into Saturday’s incident remains ongoing.
