A quiet Texas night turned to chaos when a private aircraft crashed onto a Laredo highway Tuesday evening, erupting into flames as bystanders and emergency crews scrambled to pull survivors from the wreckage.
Authorities confirmed one fatality in the crash while five other passengers were rescued and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. on Loop 20 near the US Mexico border, sending shockwaves through the community and blocking traffic in both directions.
Police said the plane was a Cessna Citation Latitude operated by NetJets, part of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway portfolio.

The aircraft had taken off from San José del Cabo, Mexico, bound for Austin before diverting toward Laredo.
According to Laredo Police Public Information Officer Jose Baeza, emergency responders were met with a devastating scene when they arrived.
“Regrettably and tragically there is one deceased involved in this crash,” Baeza told reporters.
He added that responders heroically battled flames and smoke to reach survivors, with some officers suffering from smoke inhalation during the rescue.

Witnesses described the fiery spectacle in stunned disbelief.
“It looked like part of a movie. I was in shock,” said Zayra Garza, who came upon the crash while driving coworkers home.
“What was worrying me was the fire. I was concerned that it could have just exploded at any time.”
Her words reflected the intense danger faced by both rescuers and bystanders as they confronted the inferno.
Video footage from the scene showed the plane upside down, engulfed in flames that lit up the dark sky.
Two nearby men armed with a shovel and a sledgehammer rushed forward to help, using their tools to break the cockpit glass and pry open the aircraft door in a desperate attempt to free people inside.
Their quick thinking likely prevented further tragedy.
Reports from air traffic control indicated that the Laredo tower lost contact with the aircraft shortly after the pilot reported mechanical trouble.
It was only minutes later when emergency services received word of a crash landing.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that after the plane came down, it struck a moving vehicle before skidding across multiple lanes, scattering debris across the highway.
Local officials wasted no time closing off Loop 20 as federal and state agencies took over the investigation.
The FBI and National Transportation Safety Board are both involved, along with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Authorities have urged residents to remain patient while the search for answers continues.
Mayor Victor Treviño released a statement reminding residents that aviation investigations can be lengthy.
“As Mayor, I understand the importance of allowing investigators to complete a thorough and objective review before drawing any conclusions,” he said.
“It is important that we avoid speculation while the facts are being gathered.”
His comments aimed to maintain calm amid mounting public curiosity and speculation.

NetJets, the luxury private jet company owned by Berkshire Hathaway, confirmed that it is cooperating fully with investigators.
While the company is known for its strong safety record, any crash involving corporate ownership often prompts fierce scrutiny, particularly when questions arise about maintenance standards or pilot training.
The tragedy is another reminder that despite advanced technology and modern aviation safety protocols, emergencies can strike without warning.
After departing Mexico for Austin, the crew could have had little time to react once the mechanical issue was detected.
Early reports suggest a mechanical failure led to the pilot attempting an emergency landing, one that ultimately ended in catastrophe.
Residents living near the crash site spent the night under the lights of emergency vehicles and camera crews.
Firefighters battled the blaze well into the early morning hours while investigators began collecting debris for examination.
Authorities indicated that traffic on the highway may remain closed through most of Wednesday as cleanup and analysis continue.
This disaster serves as a sobering lesson about how quickly normal life can be interrupted by tragedy.
One moment a business jet was cruising toward its destination; the next, it had turned into a blazing wreck on a Texas roadway.
For those who survived, and for those who rushed toward danger to help, the night will not be forgotten.
Officials have not yet released the name of the victim, pending notification of family members.
Meanwhile, the Laredo community has begun rallying around first responders and the survivors as they face a long road of recovery and investigation ahead.
