Just when you think the Left in Massachusetts cannot climb any higher on the crazy ladder, the town of Newbury decides to pick a fight with patriotism itself.

Residents of Plum Island recently received letters warning them to take down their American flags because they might annoy some local shorebirds.

Yes, you read that correctly, the town is worried the sight of Old Glory might disturb the delicate feelings of plovers.

As Red State reported, the letter from the town of Newbury explained that “activities intended to deter protected shorebirds from utilizing suitable habitat may be viewed as harassment or disruption of normal feeding, nesting, or migratory behavior.”

It warned residents that doing something so dangerous as flying a flag could violate the federal Endangered Species Act and carry “significant regulatory and financial penalties.”

Nothing says freedom like government bureaucrats telling citizens their patriotism could result in a fine.

The residents of Plum Island were understandably furious. This was just another example of the nanny state’s obsession with controlling every inch of private property and crushing any visible sign of traditional American values.

It seems that for the Left, the birds’ feelings always come before the rights of taxpayers.

Thankfully, the Pacific Legal Foundation stepped in to defend common sense. The nonprofit law firm, which takes on cases involving individual liberty and property rights, sent its own response to Newbury officials on behalf of resident Marc Sarkady.

Their letter demanded that the town explain exactly what legal authority justified threatening homeowners over flags. It also noted that the letter provided no statute, regulation, or court precedent that supported this overreach.

In other words, the town was acting like a petty tyrant, hoping no one would call them out.

The law firm made it clear that flying decorations or celebrating America on private property is not a federal crime, no matter how sensitive a handful of birds may be. When the word got out, Newbury’s bureaucrats scrambled to backpedal.

Town Administrator Tracy Blais tried to walk the whole thing back with a weak explanation that fooled no one.

She claimed, “The letter merely recited provisions of the law, and the Town is not asserting any threat or legal liability, merely reminding property owners that they live in a very special place which comes along with certain responsibilities.”

She then insisted the town was not claiming any power it did not have. That’s an interesting way of saying, “Please stop being mad at us.”

The truth is that the letter came across as hostile and condescending, not as a friendly neighborhood reminder. It read like the work of mini dictators eager to boss around their residents under the guise of environmental virtue.

Local journalist Tom Shattuck of The Maine Wire reported that plenty of American flags were still waving proudly throughout the island.

He even asked if the town showed the same passion for enforcing rules against Pride flags during Pride Month. No answer was provided, and we all know why.

This latest attempt to shame Americans for loving their country fits perfectly into a pattern we have seen across the nation.

From homeowners' associations in California banning flags to bureaucratic snitches in Massachusetts, the Left’s obsession with policing patriotism is out of control.

These people fold under the weight of their own ideology, prioritizing virtue signaling over common sense and freedom.

It is telling that the same crowd that never misses a chance to fly every flag under the rainbow loses their minds when the Stars and Stripes appear. Ordinary Americans see right through it.

They know this kind of nonsense has nothing to do with plovers or wildlife protection and everything to do with suppressing national pride.

The idea that a fluttering piece of fabric could disrupt a bird’s day is as laughable as it is insulting.

The backlash in Newbury has been swift and satisfying. Residents are holding their ground, showing that they refuse to surrender their basic rights to overzealous bureaucrats.

The Left can try to police patriotism all they want, but real Americans are not playing their game.

As we near our nation’s 250th birthday, the people determined to destroy the American spirit are revealing themselves more clearly than ever.

They can whine about endangered birds all they want. Americans will celebrate this milestone and proudly fly their flags, plovers or no plovers. And the more these local tyrants and woke busybodies fuss about it, the higher those flags will fly.

There is something deeply ironic about supposedly progressive towns like Newbury claiming to defend the natural world from “disruption” while disrupting their own residents’ fundamental freedoms.

The truth is simple. You cannot claim to care about liberty while issuing threats for waving the very symbol of it.

If the Left’s mission is to extinguish every sign of national pride, they are in for disappointment. From Massachusetts to California, people are tired of being told what they can celebrate, what they can say, and what they can display on their own property.

The American flag has survived wars, protests, and storms. It will outlast the bureaucrats of Newbury as well.
