A Florida man and his dog encountered an out-of-place crab armed with what appeared to be a blade, producing a bizarre video that quickly drew millions of views online.

The crustacean repeatedly moved its claws while holding the weapon as the pair approached, as reported by The New York Post.

Sunshine State resident Eduardo Alvarez shared the footage on Instagram with a fitting assessment of the increasingly strange scene. “Florida is getting out of hand.”

Alvarez’s dog, Summer, can be seen investigating the unusual visitor shortly before the armed crab appears to swipe toward the tiny pup.

The dog remains close while Alvarez steps forward and attempts to take control of the situation.

The crab does not make the task easy. Alvarez struggles to grab the feisty creature as it holds the apparent blade and moves its claws toward him.

“Summer, where the heck did you find a crab with a freaking shank?” Alvarez asks during the encounter. His laughter adds another thoroughly Florida element to the already unbelievable footage.

Alvarez eventually manages to get hold of the crab and moves it farther into his yard. Summer continues watching as her owner deals with the armed intruder.

“Summer, I don’t recommend messing with this,” he warns. The advice seems reasonable, considering the crab’s weapon and apparent willingness to use it.

Alvarez then delivers the line that captures the entire spectacle. “This is a gangster-ass crab,” Alvarez quips.

The creature appears to be a blue land crab, a species that can be found in Florida. According to the source report, the crabs are typically found within five miles of the coast.

Blue land crabs can have a legspan measuring up to 12 inches wide. They can also weigh around a pound, making the armed specimen considerably more imposing than the average backyard visitor.

The object in the crab’s claw appears to be a blade from a pocket knife. It remains unclear how the crustacean managed to obtain the weapon before Summer discovered it.

Alvarez shared the video Wednesday, and it rapidly sparked a stir across social media. The footage amassed more than 20 million views as users debated both the crab’s behavior and Alvarez’s calm response.

“I don’t know what’s more surprising: a crab with a shank or you just lifting him up like it's an everyday occurrence,” one user wrote.

The comment reflected the astonishment of viewers who watched Alvarez handle the creature while laughing.

Another viewer focused on the unmistakable Florida flavor of the encounter. “You can tell it’s Florida cuz he picked it up while laughing,” the user quipped.

Some commenters said the incident would “only happen in Florida,” while others questioned whether the footage had been generated using AI. The report did not resolve that online debate.

The Post reached out to Alvarez for comment but did not immediately receive a response. His posted video and remarks remained the main account of the strange backyard confrontation.

The Florida footage was not the first reported case involving a crab and a dangerous weapon.

Michigan native Kyle King, who resides in Japan, shared video of a crab wielding a steak knife during a camping trip in 2022.

King was awakened at 2 a.m. by scratching sounds coming from his tent.

He then saw a giant coconut crab holding the sharp knife in one claw, creating another unsettling meeting between a person and an unexpectedly armed crustacean.
