WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Elon Musk says he will give one SpaceX share to every kid in America next year.
- Musk did not specify an age range for children eligible to receive the proposed gift.
- About 73 million children under 18 currently live in America, according to Census Bureau data.
- SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell pledged more than $320 million in stock to fund Trump Accounts for more than two million children.
Children across America could soon have a direct financial interest in the future of space. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk says he plans to give one share of the company to every kid in the country.
Musk revealed the proposal in a post on X on Monday. He placed the planned giveaway next year and suggested that the initial share could be only the beginning.
"Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX ( SPCX ) shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many," Musk said.

The sweeping statement offers a simple promise with an enormous potential reach. Musk, however, did not specify an age range for the children who would be eligible to receive the proposed stock gift.

That unanswered detail matters because the number of possible recipients changes significantly depending on the ages included. Musk used the broad phrase “every kid in America,” while providing no further age parameters in the announcement.
There are currently about 73 million children under the age of 18 living in America, according to the latest data from the Census Bureau. That figure illustrates the sheer size of the group if Musk’s plan covers all minors.
The number becomes considerably smaller if the proposal is aimed only at younger children. Approximately 18.5 million children in America are newborns through 4 years old, according to the Census Bureau data.
For now, Musk’s stated plan remains straightforward. One SpaceX share would go to every child covered by the proposal next year, followed by what Musk described as the “first of many.”

Musk did not identify what those additional gifts might include. His statement also did not clarify whether “the first of many” referred to more SpaceX shares, more rounds of giving, or another form of future gift.
The market response delivered a small but immediate jolt. SpaceX stock rose 1% in premarket trading on Monday following the announcement.
The pledge also arrives alongside another major stock commitment involving SpaceX leadership and children. SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell has already promised a substantial personal donation connected to Trump Accounts.

Shotwell pledged more than $320 million in SpaceX stock to fund Trump Accounts for more than two million children. The commitment is a personal donation from the SpaceX executive.
Musk’s proposal is broader in its stated reach because he said the gift would go to every kid in America. The absence of a specified age range means the exact number of intended recipients remains unclear.
Even the narrower Census Bureau figure would place millions of children within the potential pool. The broader figure covering children under 18 reaches about 73 million, making the promised distribution a massive undertaking based on Musk’s own words.
The announcement centered on a single SpaceX share for each child. Musk did not attach a dollar value to the proposed individual gift in his X post, while SpaceX shares posted the reported 1% premarket increase Monday.
The plan combines two of Musk’s most visible platforms. He made the announcement through X while promising ownership in SpaceX, the company where he serves as founder and CEO.
Brian Sozzi, Yahoo Finance’s Executive Editor, reported the development. He is also the host of the Sozzi Unleashed morning show and the “Power Players With Brian Sozzi” podcast, and he serves on Yahoo Finance’s editorial leadership team.
Sozzi can be followed on X at @BrianSozzi, as well as on Instagram and LinkedIn. The central question now remains the scope of Musk’s pledge, particularly which ages will count when the promised SpaceX shares are distributed next year.
