WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Omar described a basic paycheck to paycheck life despite receiving $85,000 for Washington lodging and $33,000 for meals from taxpayers since 2023.
- Her campaign paid Mynett’s former consulting firm nearly $3 million between 2018 and 2020.
- Rose Lake Capital received $11.25 million from Indian billionaire Byju Raveendran in June 2024 during a failed loan acquisition deal.
- Omar amended her 2024 disclosure, reducing the couple’s reported net worth from as much as $30 million to no more than $65,000.
- Federal investigators are examining Omar’s immigration history and financial disclosures, while Omar says the investigation amounts to political intimidation.
Rep. Ilhan Omar portrayed herself and her husband, Tim Mynett, as barely keeping their finances together during a Wednesday interview with MSNOW. The Minnesota Democrat described a basic life built around two rented homes, four children, and one 2016 Toyota Camry.
“I mean, it's, you know, working, working-class, I guess, like paycheck to paycheck still,” Omar said. During the same interview, she was asked whether she was related to her previous husband before Mynett and answered, “Not to my knowledge.”
Omar also denied wrongdoing over an amended 2024 financial disclosure that dramatically reduced her reported net worth. The original filing placed it as high as $30 million, while the amended report said she and Mynett were worth no more than $65,000.
Her claims of struggling with rent face an inconvenient complication. House spending records show taxpayers have provided Omar with $85,000 for Washington, D.C., lodging through a congressional benefit activated in early 2023.

Omar earns a base congressional salary of $174,000 before the lodging benefit. Records also show she has collected $33,000 since 2023 through another benefit covering daily meals.
The financial trail extends to Omar's campaign and Mynett's former consulting business, E Street Group. Her campaign paid the firm nearly $3 million between 2018 and 2020, and Omar's 2020 and 2021 financial disclosures reported that Mynett received company distributions totaling up to $2 million.
Those campaign payments drew intense scrutiny, and Mynett closed E Street Group in 2022. He then joined former DNC adviser Will Hailer in several ventures, including a California winery, a marijuana investment business based in South Dakota, and the international venture capital firm Rose Lake Capital.

By 2024, those businesses were involved in lawsuits and fraud allegations, according to the Washington Free Beacon. Mynett and Hailer's businesses resolved their debts and disputes by the end of that year, shortly after Rose Lake Capital received $11.25 million from Indian billionaire Byju Raveendran.
Investors sued the marijuana venture, Badlands, for $1.7 million while alleging fraud. Hailer had told them in writing that he could not repay their funds because the Office of Foreign Assets Control had seized control of the company's accounts.
The winery, eStCru, stopped paying employees in 2023. By February 2024, it had only $650 in its bank account while owing another investor $780,000 to settle a separate fraud allegation.
Raveendran owns the now bankrupt educational technology firm, Byju. Hailer testified during bankruptcy proceedings that Rose Lake Capital received two wires from Byju in June 2024 totaling $11.25 million in connection with a failed attempt to acquire a $1.2 billion leveraged loan at the center of the case.

Hailer testified that the money traveled to Rose Lake “from Dubai to Mauritius to the UK to the USA.” According to his testimony, Byju demanded that the funds be returned days later.
Whether Rose Lake Capital returned the $11.25 million remains unclear. By the end of 2024, the winery and marijuana ventures had settled their respective fraud lawsuits with cash payments, while Rose Lake Capital distributed $213,000 to Mynett, according to records reviewed by the Wall Street Journal in April.
One investor told the New York Post he was “shocked” that Mynett and Hailer found the money to settle after claiming financial insolvency months earlier. The June 2024 transfer also preceded Omar's original disclosure that placed Mynett's Rose Lake Capital stake at up to $25 million and his winery stake at up to $5 million.
Omar amended the filing in April, lowering the couple's reported 2024 net worth to no more than $65,000 and listing Mynett's companies as worthless on paper. Her office told the Free Beacon that Mynett's accountant had failed to include business liabilities when calculating their value.
Omar now faces an active federal investigation into whether she or her late father lied on immigration paperwork to obtain U.S. citizenship. Federal agents searched her home, seized her phone under a warrant approved by a court, and interviewed family members, including her older sister, Sahra Noor.
Authorities have reportedly obtained DNA evidence that could be used to examine allegations that Omar married her brother, Ahmed Elmi, who lives in London. Prosecutors referred to her in a Wednesday court filing as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.”
U.S. attorney Jeanine Pirro said her office is also examining Omar's financial disclosures. “We're looking at the facts. Based upon the facts, we'll follow them wherever they take us,” Pirro told Axios.
President Donald Trump responded Thursday on Truth Social, “Because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress.” Omar called the investigation political intimidation and declared, “I will not be silenced.”
