French travel influencer Emma Marie Laurent, 24, was among three women killed when powerful currents swept away a pickup truck during an attempted river crossing in Nicaragua, according to Jam Press. The fatal incident followed heavy rainfall that had caused the river to rise, as reported by Fox News.
Laurent was traveling with a group through El Manzano, a community in the northwestern department of Chinandega. The group attempted to cross the Nahualapa River at around 1 a.m. on Oct. 9, Jam Press reported.
Recent rainfall had created dangerous conditions along the river before the vehicle entered the water. Despite those conditions, the pickup proceeded with the crossing and was caught in the current.
The driver was identified as Mexican national Martin Gerardo García Girón. According to Jam Press, he stepped out of the pickup before attempting the crossing so he could assess the water level.

The water reportedly reached close to García Girón's knees during his assessment. Once the pickup entered the river, however, the strong current swept the vehicle away and caused it to overturn.
Laurent and two other women died following the attempted crossing. The source did not identify the other two women or provide further details about them.
García Girón survived the incident, according to Jam Press. Reports differed on whether any other passengers also managed to reach safety after the pickup was carried away and overturned.
Authorities were investigating the circumstances surrounding the crossing. No additional findings from that investigation were provided in the report, leaving the precise sequence of events under official review.

Nicaraguan co-President Rosario Murillo offered condolences to the victims' families after the three deaths. Murillo publicly described the incident as a tragedy while expressing solidarity with those affected.
"This is a tragedy," Murillo said, according to reports.
"We express our solidarity and our call to remain vigilant and, in the face of such tragedies, to express our full solidarity."
Murillo also warned residents and travelers about the dangers posed by river crossings during Nicaragua's rainy season. Her comments focused on how calm-looking water can suddenly become dangerous when currents intensify.
"Rivers are deceptive; one thinks they are calm and, suddenly, the current comes, and we have tragedies like this that bring mourning to families," Murillo said, according to Jam Press.
Before her death, Laurent had developed an online following by documenting her travels around the world. Her content included glimpses of her life on the road while traveling from her van.
Laurent described herself as "your barefoot BFF" on Instagram. Jam Press reported that she had nearly 43,000 followers on the platform at the time of her death.
Her final social media post appeared to have been shared on Oct. 2. The upload featured a video from a recent trip to Portugal and included Laurent's thoughts about appreciating ordinary moments and the surrounding world.
"I think the most beautiful people, inside and out, are those who know how to admire the world around them," Laurent wrote in French.
After reports of Laurent's death emerged, social media users began leaving messages of remembrance beneath that final post. One user wrote, "Condolences to the family."
The messages appeared beneath the same post in which Laurent had reflected on finding beauty in the world. Her death came seven days after that Oct. 2 upload and during the group's journey through Nicaragua.
The pickup involved in the crossing was later shown overturned after being swept away by the swollen Nahualapa River. The deadly incident claimed the lives of Laurent and two other women, while the driver survived.
