A shooting inside the Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center in Fairfield, California, left one person dead and six others injured Friday night. At least three of the injured victims were reported in critical condition.

Fairfield police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time. Officers arriving at the shopping center discovered seven people suffering from gunshot wounds.

One victim died at the scene, according to the information released by authorities. Emergency personnel transported the six surviving victims to local hospitals for treatment.

Officials had not released the identities of any victims as of the report. The Solano County Coroner’s Office also had not publicly identified the person who was killed as of Saturday.

Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall addressed the deadly shooting during a press conference late Friday night. He confirmed that authorities had counted seven victims following the gunfire inside the mall.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this heartbreaking incident,” Marshall stated. His remarks came as investigators began working to determine what happened inside the store and who was responsible.

Marshall said the available information pointed investigators toward the seasonal retailer as the central location of the violence. “It appears the shooting was centered on the Halloween store.”

At that stage of the investigation, police did not know whether one person or multiple people had been involved. Authorities also had not determined whether the shooting was targeted or connected to gang activity at that time.

Investigators expected surveillance video from the mall to become part of their effort to establish what unfolded. “I know the mall has cameras, so hopefully we’ll get some of that footage,” Marshall added.

The police chief also asked members of the public to contact authorities if they possessed information about the shooting. That appeal came while officers and detectives continued gathering evidence surrounding the seven victims.

By Saturday, the Fairfield Police Department said preliminary information had shifted the investigation toward a targeted incident. The department reported that the shooting appeared to involve one suspect inside the Spirit Halloween store.

“Detectives continue to actively investigate this case, reviewing video footage and other evidence to identify the individual responsible for this heinous act of violence. Currently, we are not releasing additional details about the incident,” the department added.

That Saturday statement provided a more focused preliminary account than officials had offered Friday night. Even so, police did not release further details about the circumstances surrounding the targeted incident.

Authorities had not issued a description of the suspect as of the report. No arrests had been made, leaving detectives to continue reviewing footage and other evidence in their attempt to identify the person responsible.

Police said there was no ongoing threat to the public. The department nevertheless acknowledged the fear and concern created by a deadly shooting inside a store at the shopping center.

“We understand that an incident of this nature is frightening and deeply unsettling. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant, look out for one another, and report any suspicious activity,” the department added.

The department again emphasized that information from the public could assist the continuing investigation. “Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be valuable to this ongoing investigation.”

The case remained active while detectives examined video and other available evidence. Police had moved from uncertainty about the number of people involved to a preliminary indication that one suspect carried out a targeted incident.

Several major questions nevertheless remained unanswered in the information released to the public. Authorities had not identified the suspect, announced an arrest, disclosed the victims’ identities, or provided additional details about what led to the gunfire.

For the six surviving victims, the immediate aftermath involved treatment at local hospitals, with at least three listed in critical condition. For investigators, the focus remained on identifying the individual responsible for the deadly violence inside the store.

Fairfield police continued urging witnesses and others with relevant information to come forward. The department’s public message was clear that even seemingly minor details could prove useful as detectives worked through footage and evidence.
