A 17-year-old suspect was shot and later arrested after an attempted carjacking involving an off-duty New York State trooper at a gas station in Yonkers, according to police.

The incident occurred Sunday at approximately 12:45 p.m. at a Mobil gas station located on Kimball Avenue.

The Yonkers Police Department said officers were called to the scene after receiving a request for assistance from an off-duty trooper assigned to New York City.

According to investigators, the trooper reported that she had discharged her firearm after a male suspect attempted to stab her during the encounter.

Police said the trooper had been refueling her vehicle at the time of the incident. After completing the transaction, the suspect approached her, produced a knife, and entered the driver’s seat of her vehicle.

Authorities said the trooper responded by firing one shot from her off-duty weapon.

The bullet struck the suspect in the left arm and continued into his torso.

Following the shooting, the suspect remained inside the vehicle and accelerated, driving toward the rear of the gas station property.

Police said the vehicle traveled through a shed and a fence before coming to a stop in the parking lot of a nearby apartment building on Midland Avenue.

The suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot in the direction of Midland Avenue.

Yonkers police officers responded to the area and located the suspect near the entrance of the apartment building.

He was taken into custody without further incident.

A knife was recovered from him at the time of the arrest, according to police.

Emergency medical aid was provided at the scene before the suspect was transported to a local hospital.

Authorities said he was treated for gunshot wounds that were not considered life-threatening and remains in stable condition.

Police identified the suspect as a 17-year-old resident of Yonkers.

He is awaiting arraignment and is expected to face multiple charges, including first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery, third-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and second-degree menacing.

The Yonkers Police Department said its Detective Division Major Case Squad is leading the criminal investigation into the incident.

In addition, an internal review of the shooting is being conducted by the New York State Police, in line with standard procedures involving the discharge of a firearm by an off-duty trooper.

Officials have not released the name of the suspect due to his age. No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the attempted carjacking and the use of force by the off-duty trooper.
